Hi - looking for decent on-beach equipment rental (e.g. like Vela) in PR. Any suggestions where to go? and does PR have decent wind in early Jan or do I need to go to ABC islands that time of year? Thanks!

There are no rentals of windsurfing gear in Puerto Rico except for one guy renting a 11'2" Viper with only a 4.7 sail.
Veluano is supposed to rent out of Ocean Park, San Juan, but is stuck doing only SUP stuff for the past 3 years.
We'll be in PR until around the 12th or so, usually sail out of 7 Seas in Fajardo, but come to San Juan 3 days a week to sail at PuntaLasMarias and IsleVerde beaches.
If you're around then, give us a holler and you can take out gear out. Basically 100 liter boards and 5.5 sails.

Hi. Im cruising a 38' Jeanneau, and have a ninety L and one ten L board on the boat, sail sizes four five, five, five seven, and six five. Im in Bocas del Toro, Panama now and disappointed with the wind. Ive been spoiled with SF bay area wind, so looking to get to somewhere windier. Ill likely be leaving sometime in January, not sure when. Possibly for PR. Anyone have advice on better spots to enjoy the sport? Im fighting knot currents here with ten knots of wind typically, not ideal. All suggestions welcomed

Hi...
There is a new windsurf rental shop in San Juan, about 5 houses just West of Punta Las Marias launch site. They rent RRD FreeRace and free ride boards for the area, around 102 up to 135 liters, and sails up to 7 meters. They are next door to the TresPalmas apartments, which seem to rent for less than 100 bucks a day, and across the street from the water.
We've been here now for 13 days, have sailed 4 with a 5.5 planning, missed 4 more days due to family commitments. Today is the only bad day so far, and gusts to 15 or so around 11AM.
Most wind in PR seems to be around 10-2 time period, generally, but a late blow can happen if it precedes a storm front coming in.
So far my 4th year coming here in Dec/Jan, I'd consider bringing a 7.0 sail next year, since my 102 liter French 272 easily holds it. It'd mean a boom and maybe a mast also, more stuff.
We'll be looking for wind again tomorrow, after 3 days of family stuff. Based out of Fajardo in the East, where there are no windsurfers or kiters, but we sail out of 7 Seas and it's usually just enough to plane with a 5.5 for a 150 lbs rider.
Hope you find wind.

Heading out to Puerto Rico again on Dec. 11th or so, staying till then in Jan, mostly in the Fajardo area, but some days in San Juan.
Gonna try Patillo mid week of the 15th of Dec.
Anyone on here in PR those days want to hook up?
We have ExcocetWarp 118 and French (Randy) 102, sails from 5, 5.5, 5.9, and 6.5, oh, plus a nose chopped Seatrend 8'9"er, so don't want to focus on purely wave sailng, mainly due to being based out of the East shores of PR.
Hoping Veluano will be more windurf friendly, and might rent some boards from the new rental resort next to Punta Las Marias.

Thanks for all the great info on Puerto Rico-in all the forums. Heading there in March for spring break with my wife and two teenage daughters.

Planning on 3 days in San Juan at the Tres Palmas and 3 days in Rincon. Looks like the Boarding House would be good in Rincon but do you have any other suggestions?

Clean, simple and close to the beach is our main criteria. We like being active and outdoors more than indoors and pampered. Thanks in advance.

We'll be back this year by Jan 11, '16.
Tres Palmas looks really cool, a nice small courtyard full of windsurfing gear, and kiting and SUP stuff, and the hotel right next door.
We actually sail Fajardo much more often than Punta Las Marias, because we stay right there.
Rincon is kinda wierd. We stayed at Rincon Beach Hotel a couple nights, had ESE winds, some windsurfer's just up the beach maybe 3 blocks, but it's all flat water easy stuff.
Gotta drive 15 miles NW for good surf sailing, around the big point, and maybe even Sandy Beach and spots NE from there.
We bring a 118 and 102 floater boards, usually 5.5 sails.

Thanks for the info. I am not planning on bringing any windsurfing gear so will probably only sail in San Juan due to the convenience of the rental equipment. The rest of the time will be exploring/surfing/snorkeling etc. Thanks and best regards.

Get ready for somewhat deep water, big chop, lots of refraction waves from shore, light at the launch with decent sized shorepound and a rocky shoreline with very narrow access thru the reefs, which are underwater so hard to see from shore.
The waves are about 1/2 mile out, seldom organized, lots of closeouts, but the winds steady and usually constant. Between is bump and jump mostly moderate wind sailing, mostly in the 14-21 mph range, so it's a mix of slalom and bump sailing, until you get out past the outer reefs.
Downwind is a tough catch, so unless you drift another 1/4 mile downwind, beach access from the water is sketchy without booties and a quick exit thru the shorepound. Staying in front of the launch, just upwind of the hotel (3 Palms) and at the normal rigging area on the grassy site is best. You can sight by the palm trees and the big condo behind.
Should be fun, we like to sail 7 Seas, Luquillo (behind the food kiosks), and Humacao area, but are staying at Patillos for something new, near Inches.

3 weeks in, 16 days of just over 20, but really 14-22, but lots of rain on and off, causing stronger gusts during the downpour and much less wind in lulls of sunny Carib weather.
We do lots of family stuff, so miss a few days, and it's stronger out west in Aquadilla/Shacks side.
Found good sailing on the S shore near Patillo, right upwind of Inches the surfing beach.
Heading home next week, hoping for warm S winds, rain, and Berserkly.
