I believe that folks these days are brainwashed into thinking that boards need to be very wide to be viable for learning windsurfers.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. I'm with grantmac017. I taught myself to windsurf on one of those impossible longboards from the mid-80s, and the effort wasn't even close to being tough to pull off.

Yes, yes, yes. And you can still use a horse & buggy for transportation today. Rolling Eyes

Yes, but a horse and buggy is FAR inferior for sensible transportation than a car, which suggests that you are claiming that the narrower old longboards, equally, are far inferior for learning on than the modern 'easy' short and wide.

I would suggest that those of us who learnt to windsurf, off our own initiative and without instruction, on those same 'difficult'old long narrow boards, honed our skills, and got far more satisfaction out of our progress than if we had meekly followed the modern route of 'ease' and instruction.

It all boils down to how people wish to tackle the obstacles thrown up by life! (We call it character building!)

I guess the question can be asked whether newer wider boards makes for better windsurfers. Frankly, I don't think so, and it can be argued that real progress is hampered by playing down the value of balance in learning the sport.

The issue is beginners staying with the sport. Will the average beginner on a narrow long board stick with it, or give up because of the difficulty. I think the wider boards give the average beginner more early on success and may likely keep them progressing in the sport.

I have talked to dozens of folks that "gave it a try" back in the old days and had little success and never did it again.

Do we only want committed "gung ho" windsurfers, or do we want the numbers to grow?

I was self taught in 1984 on a borrowed original windsurfer and a Hi Fly 500 (my first board), then my second board, a Mistral Superlight in 1985.

^+1
why did kitesurfing get so popular so quickly ??
easier and transportable
let's make learning easier and move towards transportable
(or have more decent rent centres - i would rent foil setup)

But the poster isn't a beginner, he's been doing this a couple of years and wants some sub-planing performance.

My point was you two have become those old grandparents lecturing their grandchildren. "When I was young we walked three miles in the snow to get to school". Classic nostalgia Laughing
