I've heard about / seen pictures of Cape Hatteras. Is there anywhere else that is almost as good or possibly even better on the East Coast?

overlay jobs with the opportunity for side off. that's the trick.

Hatteras offers the widest range of drivable spots. pretty narrow opportunities for work though.

matunick is cold as hell. same with chatum ma.

jupiter inlet fl would offer a bit more in the way of jobs within a commute.

side off would be fairly rare though. warmer though.

cape lookout has wilmington nc as an employment base?
dunno crap about that spot.

There's a lot of spots that can have their day.....Those days just don't come very often Smile

Seriously:

Sandy Hook once every 10 years

Southern Jersey

"Not a Republican Point" on Long Island...rumors of insanely long rides....never personally enjoyed

Rhode Island owns the Westerly winds

What do I want? a SW wind and an offshore system....a rare combo indeed.

BTW, after a 3 year hiatus Chatham is back in action with new sand in all the right places, thanks to Snowmageddon...It's not about the sharks, just the sand

Hatteras wins for most sailable days and directions....

"chatum isn't cold! but has intimidating seasonal residents"

Long season this year, Katherine didn't leave New England till January.

... But maybe you're talking about humans.

OBX gets the most press.

In New England as OC has stated. there is no one reliable or consistent spot.
You have to take a lot of driving and local knowledge to make it happen.
It helps to surf so if you go and wind does not work surfing is a great option

wsw-wnw clock wise and swell we tend to go for RI
Rare occurrence is ENE and swell then there is a spot in RI that works but it is a left hand ride on a right hand wave.

N, Se-sw and swell cape cod

Nw and swell Nahant north of Boston

NE and East not good at all

Cold is relative. It is cold now. But you can get on it comfortably most of the time. February is the toughest month.

when strictly looking at charts, one may also consider cape canaveral fl.

complication? access. one must either get a boat, or sail with lots of endurance 7 + miles away to access shoals with numerous shifting sand bars.

http://www.iwindsurf.com/windandwhere.iws?regionID=250&regionProductID=1&timeoffset=0

much smaller area to capture side off opp's. but, employment in orlando area much more diverse than avon or buxton, nc.

quite a bit warmer/hotter than OBX.

timing is critical in hatteras as well. September yields the best waves but with light wind. here is a photo album of just September wave sailing images from hatteras.

in my opinion the south facing beaches of the obx produce the most consistent down the line wave sailing. frisco, hatteras, ocracoke.

you can pick up some nice days on the east facing beaches as well, but the south side is special with long clean lines from NE wrap around or SE ground swell.

cape canaveral sounds interesting..any one been out there? photos?

canaveral

i have sailed out to it. played on some waves from time to time. typically solo. no boat, no go pro, just me and my kit. once, one other joined me, but we didn't need to go all the up the curve,m on the south side due to swell, wind angles and time available.
