Generations of high-school students have chuckled over the line, in Henry George’s 19th century book “Progress and Poverty,” that “If a man build a ship we make him pay for his temerity, as though he had done an injury to the state; if a railroad be opened, down comes the tax-collector upon it, as though it were a public nuisance.”

That’s the cable industry, which invested to create the nation’s high-speed broadband platform and now is being punished for it. Cable invested when, for regulatory reasons, the phone companies wouldn’t. Now the Obama administration says we need strict regulation because there’s not enough competition for the fast broadband option that only a lightly regulated cable industry was willing to build.

Three people, all political appointees, have decided that the internet should be treated as a public utility. They didn't feel the need for input from the hundreds of millions who use the internet daily. They won't even disclose the rules. Yet objections to that outrageous process are dismissed as partisan. Even Putin would be embarrassed.

If Republicans don't like what the FCC did, they can legislate a change.
Good luck with that. I'd like to see Republicans trying to sell the idea that corporate DSL and Cable providers are the poor injured party in the new regulations. Too many folks know the truth about the issue, and I have little doubt that internet providers will continue to make a fine profit despite the new FCC regulations. Moreover, competition is ensured in a freer environment for all.

Stop whining please. The ISP s are the enemy, the entrepreneurs in the valley are thrilled by this decision for the most part. Netflix and other content providers can use their girth to negotiate with the threat that customers will leave the ISPs that don't support them, but small content start ups won't see the light of day if this went unchecked. Reed Hunt said it best, " Comcast will be fine".
I got advice for you whiners: win a national election. Then you can appoint people to the FCC. AT&T and Comcast are the worst!!! I hate both of them!!! Countless hours on the phone with knucklehead idiots trying to describe my problems, the worst customer service ever!!!

How ever did those thousands of entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley succeed for all those years before the government stepped in to hold their hands? Perhaps this latest generation of "entrepreneurs" have a greater sense of entitlement than their predecessors. Ah, those young bucks..........relying on the government to smooth the way for them. How edgy and bold!

No biggie....I guess the flow of data has gotten to the point where content owners are concerned that their product won't teach the consumer. It's a legit concern and certainly not something that has popped up out of nowhere...

So this new generation of young studs want to make their quick millions with the obstacles removed by a benevolent government and paid for by the rest of us? No risk, just the rewards. Got it. Freewheeling and courageous.

Got used to working late into the night. Never had the luxury of bankers or government workers hours.
