|
|
Recently I acquired a 2007 Ezzy Infinity 8.5. Ezzy doesn't make an SDM mast...they designed it on their 490 RDM.
I noticed that some manufacturers still make SDM's, and in fact still DO NOT make RDM's that big. More "responsive" and "direct" are words they use to describe SDM's. And they describe their RDM using words like "softer feel" and "forgiving".
I don't plan on using the sail heavily, but when I do, it would be with my 490 NeilPryde CK95 SDM. Ezzy says that's fine, but of course, the Ezzy mast would be perfect.
Or is it...in this case? One school of thought is: an SDM is better in large sails. The other school of thought is: use what the sail designer says.
Cost is not so much an issue, as I already have the Ezzy 490 top. Also, I'm 205 lbs...is that another argument for a 490 SDM? Am I just over-thinking this?

Ezzy ONLY make RDMs.
RDM will be heavier than a 490 SDM of 100%
Ezzy doesnt show a combo for your Infinity straight 490, dont understand
THAT you only need the bottom section of the 490, in all combo cases the longer section goes on top.
Your one school of thought THOUGHT is the way I think, in a 8.5 Its a toss up which will offer better performance , I like a SDM, at times even in a 460.
It will flex better when at or near overpowered, RDM may be better in lighter winds, like I said toss up.
I think David would say that the MAST bend curve is far more important than if its a RDM or SDM.
I dont like the cammed sails..period, had the Infinity and Lion, will stay with a Cheetah. The Infinity I had a 7.5 worked best with NO cams on a SDM.
WITH a sail this old IF the NP mast works , stay with that. _________________ K4 fins

Cool, from a performance standpoint, sounds like a vote for "I'm over-thinking it". |

Totally agree. And on my smaller Ezzys' I've rigged them with both Ezzy and NP masts. The NeilPryde works, but I can definitely notice more twist at the top (which is what NP's have always been known for). |

i have tested ezzy's in SDM's. they work fine.
sometimes they work better. any sail, from any designer, becomes better at top end performance with a 100% SDM carbon mast that bends in a NP/POWERX/EPIC bend. yes, even sails designed for a lower stiffness in lower sections. tried them too.
don't believe me? do your own observations. it's called peer review.
RDM's pump better, but distort in gusts far more readily. become less stable as the wind strengthens. especially noticeable from 6.5 meters and progressively worse as sails get larger. _________________ www.aerotechsails.com

Dont feel that you are over thinking anything, over analyzing things
Johns post above is dead on what I say.
for 6.0 and down I use RDMs, 6.5 usually RDM FOR a 7.5 is a ..Well whats the wind doing, I have the option to go either _________________ K4 fins

So you might give RDM the nod for marginal wind and SDM for when it's lit up? |

I own a 9.5 Lion that I use with the proper 490 Ezzy mast and the pair works very well. I am 210# It breathes well and doesn't have an unstable feeling at all. Probably partly a benefit of the cams.
I've used it way overpowered and it was behaving quite well too. I trust Jinge that performance might be better with an SDM in that case. However, I don't race so I don't use the 9.5 overpowered on purpose. Typical use for me will be more under to normally powered, so the RDM is perfect.
I doubt I will ever compare the two since I don't own a 490 SDM. |

I have both but not 490, 460, for my 7.5 I can go either and be happy, if rigging the 7.5 , the wind or potential wind has a factor. If I think I will be powered I use the SDM,
Also that frees up the 460RDM for my 6.5, if needed. Different case than you
Different parameters for making choices.
I do feel that IF all I had to purchase was half I would go for it, not to sound condescending , the Infinity that old is not mine, if the $ is involved I would remain with what I have,UNLESS YOU PLAN TO UPGRADE THE SAIL WHICH WANTS A 490.
Yes David is the source. _________________ K4 fins
