i have talked with dave back in 2001. he said that his west coast folks demanded ____, therefore he was going to provide them with _____. this was when jason voss and i were sailing a 8.5 infinity at the board test in maui. and we asked him to provide a 490 SDM. he came back with a 490 skinny. the sail felt worse to us. after he left, i put a 490 SDM in his sail, and it was WAY better. so, he acknowledged what we said in a very back handed way.
fashionistas ruled way back then too. head to head testing was way easier back then, we had 150+ sails to play with. i did the same kinda stuff in later years here in FL. it helped me stay interested in testing gear. i learned a bunch by doing so too. scientific method trumps everything else. _________________ www.aerotechsails.com

I went and asked David, and he says:
"An SDM has the potential to be lighter weight, because the wall thickness of an SDM is less than an RDM. This is especially noticeable on a 490."
I also have a Aerotech Phantom 7.5, so I thought I would see what Steve would say. He responded:
"SDM will be much more stable and will give more control and speed. The RDM will have a bit more low end power and will pump onto a plane slightly sooner. For flat water and small surf i prefer the SDM. For waves I like the security of the RDM."
Anyways, I have my answers now...thanks guys. |
