Three Caterpillar Facilities Raided by Feds
The agencies involved include the IRS's criminal investigation unit, the U.S. Department of Commerce Office of Export Enforcement and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.'s office of inspector general.

CHICAGO (AP) — Federal law enforcement officials raided three central Illinois facilities of manufacturer Caterpillar on Thursday as part of an investigation the company said may be related to business with its Swiss subsidiary CSARL.

Officials from three federal agencies, some wearing jackets that said "police, federal agent", searched the Peoria, Illinois, headquarters of Caterpillar, one of the world's largest makers of construction and other heavy equipment. Facilities in East Peoria and Morton, Illinois, also were raided under a federal warrant, U.S. Attorney's office spokeswoman Sharon Paul said.

"We believe the execution of this search warrant is regarding, among other things, export filings that relate to the CSARL matter," Caterpillar said in a statement later on Thursday, referring to its Swiss subsidiary.

Quote:
A 2014 report by U.S. Senate Democratic staff said that Caterpillar had avoided paying $2.4 billion in U.S. taxes since 2000 by shifting profits to the affiliate in Switzerland.

The report said Caterpillar paid PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP $55 million to develop the tax strategy. Under the strategy, Caterpillar transferred the rights to profits from its parts business to a wholly controlled Swiss affiliate called CSARL, even though no employees or business activities were moved to Switzerland, the report said.

In exchange, CSARL paid a small royalty, and the income was taxed at a special rate of 4 to 6 percent that Caterpillar negotiated with the Swiss government, the report said.

Before the arrangement, 85 percent of the profits from the parts business were taxed in the U.S., the report said. Afterward, only 15 percent of the profits were taxed in the U.S. The rest was taxed at the special rate in Switzerland, the report said.

Last month, Caterpillar said in a filing with the SEC that it was "vigorously contesting" a notice from the IRS that it owed $2 billion more in U.S. taxes for the years 2010 to 2012 from profits earned by the Swiss unit CSARL.

notice how the right wing have no problem funding all kinds of things against dems.

but dems have to rely on small poorly funded groups like the ACLU to get basic justice.

because this is not dark money this is what we can see....

This is a good example of what is probably the norm. Here is one of the most important issues there is for the interpretation of laws for the next 30 years and the dems just do not have any big donors like the right wing. In the general elections it is the dark money that we know comes from right wingers in huge untraceable amounts. Plus generally we have the corporate money in huge amounts against the dems.

Here we have some real numbers.. citizens united allows the ultra rich to buy america... 20 to one...

Senate Democrats vastly outspent by right in Gorsuch fight

Quote:
Conservative spending has already swamped the liberal opposition to Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court in the weeks leading up to his confirmation hearings, which are set to begin Monday in the Senate.

By a nearly 20-to-1 margin, conservative groups have vastly outspent their liberal counterparts on television advertising on behalf of Gorsuch, according to Republican estimates of ad purchases since the end of January. Most of the conservative fire has been directed at seven Democratic senators in states where President Trump won last year, trying to push them into beating back an expected blockade of Gorsuch’s nomination from liberal Democrats.

So far, none of the 48 Senate Democrats have said they will back Gorsuch. But the genial judge’s tour of Capitol Hill has yielded few controversies, and if Gorsuch is confirmed, Democrats may look back with regret on their paltry investment in a campaign outside of Washington to beat him.

Across the country, from Trump’s announcement of Gorsuch on Jan. 31 until last week, total ad spending was more than $3.3 million supporting Gorsuch, with just $181,000 from liberal groups opposing his confirmation, according to the GOP estimate.

Democrats and liberal groups did not dispute that they are being badly beaten on the airwaves in the fight over Trump’s first nomination to the Supreme Court. Some estimates from conservatives suggest the spending deficit is even wider. It’s a shocking disparity given the incredibly high stakes for a nomination that could keep the high court tilted to the right for decades to come.

Companies donated twice as much to Trump's inauguration as to any other—because Trump can be bought
Quote:
If there's one thing we learned during Donald Trump's campaign, full of events at his own properties and bills for his own branded products and services, it was that Trump is a man who lives for the petty grift. Whether it be the revelations of just how blindly crooked "Trump University" was set up to be (and dear God, we should never get over that) or charging his own campaign $1 million to set themselves up on a vacant, hollowed-out floor of Trump tower, the man made it perfectly clear that his integrity was for sale at blowout prices.

So it seems obvious that those seeking favors from the incoming grifter-in-chief would rush to buy a cheap piece of Trump.

Some of the country’s wealthiest Republicans and its largest corporations had similar impulses. Documents released this week by Mr. Trump’s inaugural organizers provide a glimpse of the big-dollar frenzy of influence-seeking and peacemaking surrounding Mr. Trump’s swearing-in, which raised $107 million, twice as much money as any other inauguration.
Not only did Trump collect twice as much cash as any previous inauguration effort, just think how little of that cash needed to go toward crowd control!

Some of that "twice as much money as any other inauguration" came from the usual suspects. Billionaire Robert Mercer, seemingly omnipresent benefactor of efforts to bring "alt-right" racism into the mainstream, and perennial Republican candidate-buyer Sheldon Adelson both plunked down cash. Much of the rest comes from corporations seeking favors.

At least $10 million — about one out of every $10 raised — came from coal, oil, and gas companies or their executives.
What did they get out of it? They got the installation of their very own crook as head of the EPA, which is the sort of thing the heads of extraction companies dream about during cocaine overdoses. The cable companies donated big, and they'll be getting a rollback of privacy restrictions on what they can do with customer data. Private prison companies dumped money in; they're expecting to be prime beneficiaries of the "deportation camps" Trump will need in order to keep his campaign promise to deport millions of people.

That's the thing about Trump, and almost certainly the precise reason companies were willing to throw money at him to the tune of "twice as much money as any other inauguration." The man made it very clear he can be bought. His entire Twitter feed is devoted toward publicizing those that treat him well, and punishing those that do not. It is his persona. You're damn straight corporate lobbyists will be frequenting his hotels, and new cash-rich visitors will suddenly decide they need a new membership to Mar-a-Lago, and companies from Boeing to Pfizer to Comcast will be tossing checks his way and making sure he knows they're doing it.

You want government to do what you want? You give Donald Trump money and tell him you like him. It's as simple as that.

'Phony numbers & front groups' among inauguration donors

A crowdsourced investigation of the inaugural committee's financial report found widespread errors and misrepresentations, including one donor whose listed address is an empty lot in New Jersey.
