Anyone know how the drought has affected sailing at San Luis? I'm considering an ABK Camp there in June (The Rio Camp is not an option for me). Any insights would be appreciated. |

Should be no problem. ABK is in the fore bay and that water level is controlled
from the dam on the big lake.
I drove by there a couple weeks ago and the big lake had a surprising amount
of water. It was only down about 30 ft from max full. Considering it was close to empty in the fall, that was a pleasant surprise. |

The oneil forebay water level is not effected by
the upper lake level . Last year when the upper lake was
at rock bottom there were still reasonable to even high levels.
I have been down there once this year already and the upper
lake is looking better than last year at about 70% full .
I might hit it again this week the tuesday to thursday graphs
look reasonable.

Also weeds are the big problem I think they will start early with
all the sunshine we have been getting .
Always bring a weed fin.
There is a water level report for the
Forebay by the hour. The link is in the site info. You need a minimum of 219 for reasonable sailing but 220 and above is ideal.

Getting favorable wind is always the bigger concern there. |

San Luis has been going off on a regular basis.
The water level has been good.
Small weed clumps are starting to show but are not
a problem yet.
BE SURE to have your equipment dry because they
will not let you in with wet straps. (Boards are what they check)
due to Zebra Mussels in adjacent lakes.
This happened today to some poor unlucky guy the
ranger told me. |

The ranger let us in with damp boards but they had been in the ocean, she could feel the salt on her hands. BTW there is a sign that the gate is closed sunset to 6am, she said it's closed but not locked. |

They do want you off the water by dark though.
There have been a lot of new people manning the gate so
what you get in terms of getting in may vary widely . |

What do they charge to camp there in a RV for a spot next to the water? How busy will it be over the July 4th weekend? |

I'm impressed, by both the individual ranger and her institutional flexibility. So many officials go by the book (Wet straps = no entry) rather than apply logic to a situation. |

I sailed there Thursday 6/4/15. It pretty much blew from early morning to dark. 4.7 all day and at times overpowered. My first session was on the highway side from the camp ground area. No weeds and the bay was pretty much full. A bit of a wind shadow at the launch. Very confused ruff water in the middle and far side. Might have been better if I brought my 75 liter board. After lunch I drover over to the creek side where they have the ABK camp. The wind was side off making for smoother water. Still over powered on the 4.7 but smooth water for blasting turns on each side. A bit more shallow there but still no problems. Just a spring suit in the afternoon. We use to go there a bunch back in the day. Not much has changed. Only two other people out. Don't know about the weekend crowd. I was going to stay for the night. After checking a few hotels ($100 bucks) I decide to drive home.... |
