I have the 78 liter one and still sail and love this board today. Put a more vertical fin on these and they are incredibly fast B&J boards. |
If you like those, you'd LOVE mine. I have many like that and its (better) peers for sale, mostly in much better condition (theirs are largely B grade; some of mine are As) for half their prices. |

Yeah, I got the 251 JP Wave and the Naish 8'5" ready to go in the garage.
My main board is the Naish Freeride 100, maybe a true 94 liters, with the pointy nose cut off and rounded, to 8'3" length. That's year 2000 or so.
Better yet, the past 5 windsurfing days, been using 1997 Norths in Zetas, Pyros, Spectros, and Converts.
Like them better than my '07 Ezzy (too hard rotation and heavy), Duke, or Hansen and Windwings of latter 2009's. |

"Short wide boards are slow and don't point well"...
I get up wind better on my wide board than any I have sailed. |
Convince Boards Magazine of that. |
Freeride or slalom boards (excluding FW or near-FW, to eliminate the obvious) usually come with more planing surface -or at least the same flat area distributed at a higher aspect. Without a doubt, most of these will sail upwind better for two reasons: Ability to carry a deeper fin and carry a higher speed though lower rig pressure such as lulls or when pinching.
Like every comparison, this observation assumes flat to moderate chop, the right sail size, properly tuned fin and board, and everything placed where it should be. More or less. It's merely physics: the ability to hold a higher speed more consistently keeps the foils powered, the board riding flat and VMG high.
Specific sailing conditions will benefit more narrow boards, but really only in a few circumstances: A favorable current, flat water and consistent wind speed always enough to maintain a plane. _________________ Support Your Sport. Join US Windsurfing!

Some sailors would classify Formula into "short and wide".
They get upwind OK.
As for new gear, of course we all want to use the newest gear, no doubt.
As for mid '90's gear, most of you were not good enough sailors to fully utilize them back then, and have only bad memories of those days.
Robby Naish, using 1993 gear, would sail circles around all of us on our new gear. |

Naish wave boards resisted the shortwide "revolution" longer than most marques, and Robby's newest production wave board is billed by Naish as a retro shape. |

Sounds like if it works for Robby, should work for me!
For sure I find the newer boards easier that boards from 15 - 20 years ago! |

For sure, 10-15 years ago, you were not nearly as good a sailor as you are now. |

And of course, the new stuff is easier to ride, just as fast, planes up earlier with less effort. And, it's new. |
