My ancient North Disco 5.9 is popping the mylar on every session now and is mostly sail repair tape at this point. I love it for waves due to its ultra low weight and low wind range depending on downhaul. With age I am finding weight of gear more important than $ or performance in waves. Typical conditions for this sail for me are side on to near on shore , 12-18 knots and slogging is typical inside near shore. What is the lowest weight wave/bump sail out there in this class? |

I remain convinced from having tested hundreds of sails that pounds affect a sail's perceived weight far less than does its feel. After all, the board, not the rider, supports the sail's pure poundage. Heck, even just changing downhaul tension often changes its perceived weight. Not even counting the boom or mast, factors like rotational moment of inertia (related to such things as weight distribution, aerodynamics, how you flip the sail, load distribution within the sail, and more) make a big difference. A scale means FAR less than experimentation in this quest.
Experimentation has convinced hundreds (thousands?) of WSers that Northwave Featherlites feel as light as or lighter than anything on the market ... except their even lighter Nano. (Not that it matters, but NW claims the Featherlight is also the lightest sail out there.)

Hot Sail Maui FireLight is one of the lightest on the market. Besides weight it is a great sail. I have 4.3-5.0 and 6.0 and they are the best sails I ever owned. Great low end, fast upper end, big range at your fingertips (just change the out haul 2 -3 cm). It de-powers beautifully making it super easy to control. And the lack of weight helps quite a lot too. |

The Panther 3 from 2011 has a lot better , read, lighter more expensive, spectra, xply, technocra, it looks similar to the Legacy. The Legacy is a lower priced Ezzy sail, that leaves off some items, sold separately, pulley, pad, vario mast extension.
I have not sailed one, but Fox in Buxton has had them rigged for viewing, and I see lots of Ezzy quality built in.
So yes indeed its a option in this case _________________ K4 fins

I have been a long time Ezzy sailor. After sailing an Elite last year, I have turned over my entire quiver to these amazing sails! They feel much lighter than my Panther III's and just as stable. Amazing that Dave Ezzy was able to eliminate a batten and still make a better sail! |

Elite expensive.
Legacy less so.
I have both sails. If your a hard core wave guy, spend the money and buy the best...
If your looking for a lite, lite air sail for funning around, you can't go wrong with the Legacy. No frills quality sail for a lot less cash. No built in mast pad. D-ring instead of pulley and a lite weight sail bag.. those things make no difference on the water..... |

Good inputs all. Looked up the numbers I could find on the web for sails in this class:
Ezzy Elite 5.7/3.48kg, 6.1/3.61kg
Ezzy Legacy 5.8/3.3kg (no mast foot sock)
Hot Sails Firelight 5.7/3.3kg, 6.0/3.5kg
Maui Sails Ghost 5.7/3.3kg, 6.1/3.5kg
Aerotech charge 5.8/4.3kg
Northwave Featherlite 5.7/??kg
Neil Pryde Atlas 5.8/4kg
North Volt 5.9/4.1kg
North Hero 5.8/3.8kg
Goya Banzai 5.7/??kg
Naish Force Four 5.7/??kg
Sailworks Revolution 5.7/3.8kg
Ezzy Elite, Hot sails Firelight and Maui Sails Ghost rock for weight. Any comments on side on light wind wave attributes for these? Low end power? A comment above from dvCali says good low end power in Hot Sails Firelite. |
