You're not alone. What if the windsurfer in the car next to you prefers listening to the wind instead of the song YOU have chosen.
We sail to share the wind so wind as a background noise is just fine.
Please turn it off.
Thanks.

In a sense music is just vibrating air, which is pretty much 'wind' on a very small scale. So in a way you really are just sharing the 'wind'. The only wind that I would rather not have other share is their broken wind....

Maybe your neighbor does not like your kind of wind.
That said, you're free to listen to your own vibrating air. Just park 1/2 mile away.

A mountain lake at 5,500 feet between Santa Fe and Albuquerque
(see http://explorenm.com/camping/Cochiti/ and scroll down to the forum for some good laughs) on a warm and breezy summer weekend attracted a packed zoo of kids, parents, old folks, WSers, fishermen, Hobie Cats, sunbathers, picnickers, rowboaters, inner tubes, you name it ... just tons of ordinary people peacefully enjoying the scene. Some young dude drives his pickup into their midst, throws his doors open, and cranks the volume up to blast everyone with his concept of "music" while he unloaded whatever toys he brought to the party. Doesn't matter whether it was grunge, country, classical ... people just didn't need it covering up the natural sounds, from kids laughing to leaves rustling to wavelets lapping the shore.

A guy walks over, reaches into the open driver's door, turns the ignition key off, shuts the door firmly, and starts to walk away. Dude objects, guy glares at him, dude wisely observed that he was outnumbered at least 100 to one, dude quietly resumes unloading his stuff and was welcomed to the scene.

For people with a conscience (or at least a little sense), a hint goes a long ways.

You nailed it.
Just a little conscience.
Enjoy natural sounds.

It doesn't matter where you go, there is always somebody that is sure that everybody would just love to hear their music. I've even given up and enjoyed mine a few times. But I agree, imposing your music on the world isn't the best way to make friends....

Or the classic, Sitting at a red light in Any City USA, when you start getting a lower back massage courtesy of the hideously distorted bass tone coming out of some juiced up sedan that pulled up next to you with all the the windows down. Oh and the lyrics, if you can call them that, go something like, and then I shot the bitch, or I beat the Ho, NICE! but maybe I'm just culturally inflexible or intolerant, or maybe I'm just old and tired.
