You Gorge guys got it all...I can't even find a bag to put it in for a hunnerd bucks!.

Yeah ... I realize that. But you have access to very good prices from Windance, which ships anywhere in the U.S. for < that hunnerd bucks. $200-$300 is more common, but I've bought some fantastic boards there for ... under a hunnerd bucks. Smile

Too bad I can't ship at anywhere near that rate.

I've also seen some folks buy too small a board while on vacation here, only to find it just gathers dust back in their world (as Ingerbritsen accurately states). If you can find that dusty board, you might get some great deals.

Really? Can you imagine not carrying around your 6.5 in your van for the polar opposite of the reason that first comes to your mind? Windance is great and the great prices of sub 125-liter boards in the Gorge and the wind to use them are all fine and dandy.

The OP wants to build a light-wind kit around a 9.5 sail as his DAILY driver. If Windance or any shop gets a non-rental-center-construction (not HRS, AST, etc) 150ish liter board and list it at $200-300, if the OP doesn't buy it, I will. Incidentally, Windance charges $200+ to ship a board that size.

Isobars, you can ship boards across the country for even less than Windance via Amtrak. You just have to make sure you tell them it's a surfboard.

So OP, where are you and are you gonna buy my board? In all honesty, I think the Sting 148 at Progressive Sports would be better for your big sail.

Disclaimer: Nothing I say should be taken very seriously. Shocked

Greetings, I have a Windsup Exocet 11'8 - which i use a lot an get a plenty of fun from. I have an opportunity to buy an RS 380 Elite Carbon Race board Exocet for about 1900 perfect condition. How will the two compare?

A little off topic but fits the light air subject.

Cheers

Rest assured, the OP would buy one too, or seven.

I've found very out there about the sting, though the price and the specs are the right ballpark. Anyone actually had any experience with it? Or know a cat that ate a bird that ate a bug that has ridden it?

There are degrees of windsurfing satisfaction.

Last week was a full on gale using my new 3.7 Pryde Combat, (to partner the 4.3 combat, and resurgent 4.2 Zeta), but yesterday was a classic 'old time' longboard (Kona) day, of hot summer sunshine and lightish force 3ish , sometimes it blows, sometimes it rests, type going.

I wasn't over bothered about planing, just delighted to soak up the sea atmosphere, and range about the bay wherever I fancied. The favourite 7.0 metre Tushingham rotational was quite adequate for the joy of just 'being there with style!'

A good long board can do what no other type of board can manage to accomplish. It can go anywhere, upwind railing on the dagger, downwind just effortlessly wafting along, or fast reaching in the straps in the windier parts.

I blasted a bit, then slowly pottered over a submerged reef, watching the bottom glide by, then blew out (offshore) to the edge of the whirlygigs (windmills) a couple of miles out, but not among them. (didn't want the patrol boat catching me this time, since I wasn't planing.)

Next, it was a reach of a couple of miles to the big river estuary and major port, to shadow the big bulk carrier ships (from a respectable distance) as they came into dock.

On landing back at the holiday beach, all sun, sea, and wind beaten but happy, a holiday maker on the sands said, ' we've been watching you all over the place, You seemed to be having fun out there.' And that summed it up!

Fun yes, but more importantly satisfaction, just as all of us used to feel in the 80's and 90's when every weekend, the water was ablaze with sails and boards. (Longboards.)

Where are they all now? WHY did they abandon it?

Gurgle, where do you do your sailing? I reconnected with longboards about 5yrs ago. Been enjoying a 1993 Mega Cat the past few weeks.

Amazing, the range of a two board, two sail quiver. 7.5 Cheetah 6.3 Ezzy SE. Been keeping the Cat and Tabou Rocket on the roof rack most of the summer. Eastern Lake Erie near Dunkirk,NY.

They are now doing other things.

They abandoned it because it wasn't fun for them anymore and there are so many more easier options to getting on and enjoying the water.

What we do on the water is very venue driven. The size of the body of water, the wind if any, the access to the water, storage & transportation along with how often you actually get on the water.

Fun is not easily defined as it is not the same for all people. Some want to jump high, some want to go fast, some want to do tricks, some want to ride waves, some want to race and some just want to putz around as you described, but all are having fun. Occasionally you get someone like you who will have fun doing two or more different styles, and rarely you get someone like me who actually has fun doing all the styles. I never get tired of windsurfing of any type, in any wind.

My 'home' patch is the Yorkshire (England) North Sea coast SeaDawg, a bit far away for you to come - for an occasional weekend! Wink

I mainly agree Coach. Most of those who threw away their longboards were bitten by the high wind shortboard image bug. They then spent less and less time actually using them (wind rarely obliges at weekends) and drifted off to more inclusive sports. (Mountain biking, for example. Any place-any time.)

I also agree that being a one dimensional personality is counter productive to lifelong fulfillment. Human beings are the most successful species on the planet precisely because we are NOT over specialised. I too will never tire of the sea (the real magnet) and windsurfing, in all of its forms, in particular, which allows me to tickle its surface in the most agreable way yet invented! It seems that the planing inflatable boards will hit the market by the end of this year. If I was shopping for a Freeride board over 100L and/or a Windsup for flat water they'll have my attention :
