Just color me one dimensional, GT ;*)

I mainly agree Coach. Most of those who threw away their longboards were bitten by the high wind shortboard image bug. They then spent less and less time actually using them (wind rarely obliges at weekends) and drifted off to more inclusive sports. (Mountain biking, for example. Any place-any time.)

I also agree that being a one dimensional personality is counter productive to lifelong fulfillment. Human beings are the most successful species on the planet precisely because we are NOT over specialised. I too will never tire of the sea (the real magnet) and windsurfing, in all of its forms, in particular, which allows me to tickle its surface in the most agreable way yet invented! Same thing happened to me. Back in the 90's, my wife and I had great times on our Mistral longboards. When I sold them (still kick myself for that move), and switched us to shortboards, my wife stopped sailing a few years later and eventually, so did I. It became much easier to just make a tee time and go play golf.

After I got tired of golf, I got back into windsurfing about five years ago, and I've got the bug back worse than ever. The most notable equipment improvement is lightwind kit (frankly lightwind equipment sucked 20 years ago). Before, I wouldn't have even thought of sailing in the summer due to lack of wind. Today it's a totally different story. I didn't get back into longboarding, because I don't sail in the bay any more (too far to drive), but with modern shortboards I can go out in the ocean in August when the seabreeze kicks up in the afternoon on a carbon 145L freeride board and 9.0 sail and fly in 14 knots at 200 pounds. Some may prefer a lawn chair in those conditions, but that's what we get here, and I NEED to sail. My time on the water has at least quadrupled due to lightwind equipment improvements. Of course living closer to the beach and internet access to current wind speed and beach cams helps too.

For any that are curious, I ended up with a 150 Shark. Thanks for all the food (for thought.)

I have a 150 Shark.
Unfortunately, it doesn't plane up as soon as my SuperSport109, my Excocet 95, or my JPSlalom84, given the same 6.0 sail.
Shark can hold a 9 meter, but my biggest is 7.4.
