OOOHHHH, no; The vast majority of WA and OR are "blessed" with a flood of cold, wet maritime weather in midwinter, beginning in Hood River at 5:25 PM on Oct 31, plus or minus 5 minutes (there's that literary hyperbole we were talking about; it's actually plus or minus 10-20 hours). The primary difference east and west of the cascades is its duration; the Cascades wring much of the moisture out, but PLENTY rushes through the gaps and up the river much of the winter. It's not uncommon for The Dalles to report the coldest temps in Oregon in midwinter. It's also not uncommon for The Dalles to report OR's hottest temps in midsummer. 114 humid (compared to Albuquerque, not Kauai) degrees flat sucks. The cure is air conditioning, whether courtesy of Willis Carrier or Mother Nature. The former source works indoors in Hood River but can be boring; the latter works in the great outdoors near Clatskenie/Jones Beach and can generate the steadiest strong wind on the whole Columbia River.
Our first winter (1999-2000) 150 miles east of Hood River was ~3 months of highs near 33, lows near 30, heavy overcast, and almost constant drizzle. But we expected it, so it was no big deal even coming from sun-drenched, bone-dry, cooler-in-the-summer Albuquerque. The only surprise was sailing clear into January bare-handed ... which turned out to be a fluke that year. What is NOT a fluke is sailing out east in bare feet under blue skies for a couple of months before Hood River emerges from hibernation. The price? The wind migrates west into the corridor once summer arrives. Sailing the Gorge requires a lot of driving, which pays off in HUGE quantities. |

Illegal and defrauding the system that has enabled a better lifestyle and standard of living. Never done it, never considered it, and never will. |
Yes you are right. It would be unfair to deprive the government of our hard earned money. |
