Another thought. Make sure you sail is set for high winds. A soft overpowered sail makes everything feel out of control...

Would a quad, thruster, or twin fin board be of any help

Not for your stated goal of BAFing.
You can thus get a great board for your purposes for next to nothing, especially since so many people are snapping up multifinned boards for real or imagined reasons. Even if you have no local access to good used gear in the eastern Great Lakes area, there's always Hatteras, and Windance has a great selection of excellent boards for you and ships stateside for <$100.

I have to agree with Isobars on this one. I have thrusters, quads, and single fin boards. I only use the multi fin boards when it's super windy and the surf is large. Even small surf and good wind, I prefer the single fin. When you are getting serious in 25 knots and mast high, go to the multi fin boards.

... IF you're no longer BAFing. I just don't see any advantage to extra fins for sailing in straight lines -- heck, even moderately crooked ones -- and I've owned scores of multi-, single-, and convertible-finned boards and tested hundreds more.

Besides, as Craig hinted, quads require a different sailing technique ... the last thing an intermediate needs just as he's getting his $#!+ together. There's no similar disadvantage to a tri, but then I see no advantage, either, in this application. It takes some damned serious maneuvering, HUGELY excessive power, unusually rough water, AND a heavy back foot to gain much from extra fins.

I weigh 205 and have to put a plug in for the Tabou 86ltr 3S. First it has the best pads in the industry and they really smooth out the ride. Secondly it has a great range. By changing fin size I can sail it from 4.7 down to 3.7 which is great on those days when it's really windy and really up and down. It also handles and maneuvers great.

Hey guys thanks for all the great advise... I am definitely going to try a smaller stiffer fin and see if that helps... and yes keeping those knees bent and use them as shocks absorbers does help out allot...

cheers guys and thanks again.....
