Was the Iraq War a "war"? Did the Congress declare war? Did the Iraq war last longer than 30 days. How 'bout Vietnam, same questions.

Many members of Congress became concerned with the erosion of congressional authority to decide when the United States should become involved in a war or the use of armed forces that might lead to war. It was prompted by news leaking out that President Nixon conducted secret bombings of Cambodia during the Vietnam War without notifying Congress.
The War Powers Resolution was passed by both the House of Representatives and Senate but was vetoed by President Richard Nixon. By a two-thirds vote in each house, Congress overrode the veto and enacted the joint resolution into law on November 7, 1973. |

The resolution also sets down reporting requirements for the chief executive, including the responsibility to notify Congress within 48 hours whenever military forces are introduced “into hostilities or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances.”
Additionally, the law stipulates that Presidents are required to end foreign military actions after 60 days unless Congress provides a declaration of war or an authorization for the operation to continue.

Guru deflects Trump's reckless act by claiming Congress should declare war. Essentially putting the burden on Congress and saving Trump from himself. When I inqure if he has any knowledge on the subject, he is silent and you pipe up. Again, based on the law you cited (which you clearly did not read or understand), why did the Iraq War take place with no declaration of war as required by the War Powers Act? The Iraq War lasted longer than 60 days. If Bush could wage war without a declaration of war, why could not Trump do the same in Syria? Why should it be placed at the feet of Congress? |
