That would be a very odd discussion.

Classic.

@zpp66: The danger differential only matters if one is considering taking up kiting, or his/her kids want to, and mistakenly believes that it's not dangerous, or no more risky than other water-sports, like windsurfing.

While one can honestly say that kiting is safer than it once was, due to equipment improvements mostly, it's still a dubious improvement, IMHO. I'll never say that it doesn't look fun, that it doesn't look physically easier than windsurfing, that kiters don't have more days on the water than windsurfers, or that it isn't cool to watch. That just wouldn't be accurate.

How about the perspective of a guy who runs a kite-surfing school in Israel, and is commenting on the decision to have kite-boarding added to the Olympics? (Article is from 2012. I wouldn't surprised if it's been discussed here somewhere.)

"People have died in kite-surfing (And sadly, we can add one more.)... I'm really scared that we are going to see some very bad accidents... it is 10 times more dangerous than windsurfing," he said.

Inbar said around 130 people had been killed in the sport worldwide...

OK, so I guess someone has said it.

Kiting is no more dangerous than giant slalom skiing.

Come on change the title/subject to "A car hit by a kiter in San Francisco" or something like" Even cars get hit by kiters in San Francisco" it's more relevant to the true story and less pitty.

After watching this thread develop into a series of rants about how much safer windsurfing is than kiting, and jokes about Russian roulette, I searched on the ikitesurf forums to see if there was a similar tone of animosity toward windsurfers.
After looking at a couple of hundred threads that involved windsurfing, I found a consistant trend of concern for maintaining good relations with windsurfers, for policing their own ranks for kiters being dangerous or rude to others, and a wish to work with windsurfers to keep sailing access open.
There was almost none of the vitriol that I've seen on threads here towards kiters.
I think we can do better in memorium to a fellow sailor that was tragically killed. The man has family and friends that are suffering his loss.

I extend my sincere sympathies to his survivors, and wish the best to them and the kiting community.

We've lost a few people just around the Bay Area from windsurfing. There have been some shocking deaths over the years.
