Decent day on the river..not crowded and still warm. Got a frown from a guy on a North sail upwind of the breakwater as we jibed, never saw him onshore to discuss it...We were both going hard upwind as we neared the rocks, me a bit behind and upwind from the guy on the North sail...Kept waiting, but he didn't jibe and we looked to be heading into a "hole", so I held up for a second or two and jibed behind...the other guy wasn't aware of me, I guess. He jibed, too....right then, and ended up right on my tail...With that few sharing the fun, he wasn't pleased, I guess.... Sorry, Northman...a glance over your shoulder would have been good, too...I didn't NEED to be that close, we just ended up like that, chasing swells.... Cheers, Don Hanson

Hey Don as windsurfers get older their necks get stiffer. No body looks when they jibe. Very Happy

We often see sails from the '90s on the river.

WTF, of course North still makes sails and many of the best pros in the world are on them. Have you ever heard of Fanatic?

Forget about best pros in the world, Two of the best pros in The Gorge, Rob Warick and Ingrid Larouche, sail on North Sails.

I don't believe in laziness, stoicism, or apathy. Considering how few people (windsurfers and kiters) look over the shoulder at the "blind" spot and beyond, I think it's a good idea to whistle or give a "yoo-hoo!" (with a smile) when one is in that blind spot. I know, it sounds kooky. But I call it being smart, assertive, and safety-conscious. A higher pitch seems to be most audible over wind and splash.

When the upwind sailor turns to view, my job is (pretty much) done trying to reduce risk of collision. And that's when the yoo-hoo! ceases to be repeated.

A bud likes to sneak up behind people and holler at them. I don't know whether he thinks startling them is funny or is just saying "Hi", but it's a giant PITA when it interrupts people's reverie or swell-stalk.

I just try not to get in others' blind spot, so we can both do whatever we like without worrying about the other. If he turns and looks over his shoulder, I assume he wants to slash or jump, so I go somewhere else to give him and myself room to play unimpeded.

OTOH, anyone in my blind spot is at risk, because my crumbling cervical vertebrae limit my neck's swivel range and I may slash downwind off a lip anywhere from 5 to 20 times per reach. Yoo hooing probably won't help because my already limited monaural hearing is further hampered by helmet noise and an earplug.

Bottom line: give hot pink and chartreuse Northwave sails a wide berth and we'll all be safer (and I'll have more fun). Very Happy

Hey Don! Good ON Ya!

Stepping up and making an effort
even when "Mr. North" is long gone.
"Showing a caring attitude we all need to have.

I was there! I did it too!
I oversheeted my Very overpowered Sail and cut off my view of
the innocent sailer coming up behind me, just downwind.
or Maybe my tierd old stiff neck didn't turn to look where he was.
I crossed behind him closer that I would be comfortable with.
My BAd.

I found him on the shore. He never was piussed, but
we had a great talk. His time at Roosevelt was still positive.

We all benefit from positive communication. talking, listening
and occationally confessing.

Thanks for hanging it out Don.
