Heard some very unsettling rumors about the HR city council trying to either ban or heavily regulate vacation rentals. Anybody have any light to shed on that?
I'd be seriously bummed...our annual summer trip is totally dependent on finding a place in town so I can sail while the wife hikes bikes and yogas and the kids take to the skate park or post canyon. Hotels are a non-starter...nowhere to put gear, dogs, or groceries!

I have not heard this, but why on earth would they consider such a move?

I'm with you. The only way I can break out to sail is if the wife can do her thing in the Hood.

This would be highly unpopular policy, but nothing the council does is too shocking. Hood River has changed so much. I imagine its only a matter of time before mass office buildings start going up.

Probably started by the new hotel owners. They want to corner the market.
Or it was started by us locals who dislike the crowds. Very Happy
The kiting (yes I said kiting) and windsurfing have been great lately. No crowds at the launch sites.

I read a little bit about it, they will not ban vacation rentals, perhaps some regulations, registration and eventually a permit process to limit the total number of vacation rentals.
I've watched this evolve on Kauai, what happens is so many homes get converted to vacation rentals it sort of destroys the character of the neighborhood for the full time residents. Some of the vacationers create issues for the residents when they cram lots of loud boisterous people into small homes making problems with noise, cars, parking, garbage etc..
People who rent full time get priced out or can't find places to live. Neighborhoods become full of transient people instead of just neighbors.
The impetus for a crack down is usually from the local residents not hotels.

This is a great idea. Perhaps they could wear some sort of identifying symbol (like an armband or something) so they could be easily identifiable when in public or especially on the water.

Now you're on to something Willy. Colored armbands. Like some people would have to wear rainbows, some would have to wear yellow stars. The "locals only" crowd could wear brown shirts to identify themselves to outsiders. Who could object to that?

Pacspeed,

Your post is ridiculous and offensive. It is bigoted to suggest that people wear symbols identifying their sexual orientation, ethnicity, religious beliefs, etc, etc. I am only suggesting that TOURISTS wear these armbands. Sheesh, some people.
