Welcome to the club. It's almost like cheating. Cool Gotta ride gear that feels good to "You".

I finally broke down and bought ... an older 75L Open Ocean 8' x 21" with the mast track further forwards than newer designs.

Thanks isobars!

Surely you don't know WTH you're talking about! Those older boards don't work any more. Rolling Eyes

Good to hear my persistence may have helped someone. I'm confident that many of the folks who bought my older (1995-2006, more or less) boards at swaps and 2nd Wind this year are also happy.

Best part is I paid about the same amount as I just paid for a new fin for one of my newer freeride boards.

Yup. I laugh my butt off all the way across the river every day at some of the phenomenal boards I've bought for $20 to $200.
Sometimes with great fins and straps and two-bolt bases and bags.

Regarding older boards. I still enjoy riding my Tiga 254 (green pad).

I bought a virtually unused 2000 carbon Tiga Wave just a year ago. WOW, what a smooth riding, fast, silky-slashing, scalpel that thing is! Those narrow boards just eradicate chop altogether, both in a straight line and in TIGHT full speed turns of any radius.

Still had a great time sailing but I came away with the impression that someone with a different sailing style would have a completely different reaction.

Absolutely true. Changes that make a board longer, shorter, wider, thicker or thinner along with bottom shape don't make a board better or worse, they make it sail different. That difference may not be to our liking but there is a good chance it is to someone else's. Sailing venue, kit setup, rider skill & rider technique will all play a major factor in how a board feels.

Venue: Fall in love with a board at the Gorge, take it home and suddenly it's a dog. Why do you think there are so many cheap boards on ebay/Craig's List/trash cans? Demoing a board? Make sure you demo it in conditions you normally sail in.

Setup: Footstraps/mastbase/fin/sail all play a huge part in how your board sails. Most people are not willing to fiddle around with all the parts to get the board trimmed properly. One of the major issues with our sport is it is too technical.

Rider skill: Naish can do wonders with any board because of his skill. Doesn't mean you can. Know your capabilities.

Technique: As with setup, different boards can require different technique to work well. Unwilling to change your technique? Not a problem, but it's not the boards problem either. Not necessarily a bad board, just a bad technique-board combination.
