Everything that dvCali said plus some good luck helps.
I had the same brand, same type and size and same year boards that were completely different when it comes to durability. Sometimes they just have wrong person working on it at the factory. Or something goes wrong with a particular batch of product. This is why it is important to buy product that you can claim warranty on it without going through the hoops. Locally available is probably better for warranty claims.
Plus helping local businesses is also nice. So they can be there for you when you need them.
ML boards break too, but he provided excellent repair service for local riders. This is in part what made him so popular with Bay Area ML owners. |

The solution is QUALITY CONTROL.
FOR whatever reason it's a problem in these factories, China is worse. _________________ K4 fins

What board is made in China?
Kinetic was made in Taipei Taiwan.
Does Algeria/Tunisia still make windsurf boards?
Wasn't there a manufacturer in Italy?
How about the Slovak Republic?
Try to find quality control when the works rotate and SofLiving is tough. |

I don't know about the news that Mike might not be making windsurfing boards any more. I've been buying boards from him since 1993, with the last one in December 2010. Often, the list has been long. There was a time or two where I was on the list for a year or more. That said, Mike always came through for me. I still have every board that I ever bought, plus a couple used ones too. My first one was a 2 year old 1990 8'10". That started it all.
Sometimes, you need to be patient and wait. I would call Mike rather than E-Mail him. |

That and the fact that the one I had was smoke'n fast and relatively easy to
ride. I also owned a GEM like that. For a slalom board it was still pretty ridable in the Gorge.

China, Simmer and Thommen.
Kinetic WAS made in Taiwan up to 2003, when the factory was too small, in 2004 they opened a new larger one in VietNam. AFAIK NO windsurf Kinetic boards. The factory does make some SUPs.
Tunisia, AHD.
Italy don't know . Slovak Republic don't know.
Slovenia, Flikka
Bulgaria , Witchcraft factory, customs made in Canary Islands.
AB were made in China, moved to VietNam, now it's Mistral. _________________ K4 fins

Italy has 99novenove http://www.99novenove.com/ The boards were built in Italy but now only the custom line is. Kauli Seadi rides their wave and the brand was founded by Cesare Cantagalli (cheese-roll). I almost bought their slalom. They do look gorgeous. There are also a bunch of smaller builders. Tons of top of the line masts and booms are built there.
BTW: Patrik Diethelm has now Italian nationality!

A local guy has been sailing Mike's board for many years. I'm sure he was familiar with the wait times. He tried to get a replacement for a couple of years without success. He switched to Falcons, which he hated at first, but eventually got used to. So it seems that getting Mike to make a windsurf board is at least much harder than it used to be. |
