Dane, Jalama is one of the more challenging spots in the world when it's good. It's usually good in the spring and early summer. That is a COUNTY park at point conception. I believe the owners of the restaurant and store might support an event there.

Leo is only a summer spot. LA county, but a state park. I know the rangers and top administrators there. Would love to help. Many AWT competitors stop there on their way to San Carlos and Santa Cruz to sail our beautiful waves. Just ask Ferdy or Casey.

Both have parking. Although, summer at Leo can be very crowded.

I think the problem is that Leo etc have their days, but for an AWT contest you need a very good chance of 5.2 or better wind over 4-5 days. The pros don't even know how to rig a 5.7. SoCal is never going to fly.

Jalama in spring would definitely be an option, but Jalama has its challenges, no cell phone service being one of them. Plus it's not really a DTL wave. Nor even a jumping wave. Its just a gear crushing wave.

AWT events are mostly amateurs.
The pros can wave sail a 5.3 on a 6.0 day, one thing that marks them as pros.
I have asked a few how that works. They slog onto the face mostly going downwind, lay down the sail, and use the power of the wave to do a bottom, lifting the sail quickly to create wind to make the top turn.
I will ask Sam tonite at dinner, if the subject interests you.

Hi James,
Maybe you could check with the county if holding at event at Jalama is possible. Do they allow it ? Fees etc? It would have to be held the weekend before the Pistol River event..
Obviously I mean for 2017...not this year.

There used to be windsurf contests at Jalama in the very early 90's, if I remember correctly they were called the "Jalama Blowout". They had them about 3 years in a row during the spring, mostly windsurfers from all around the central coast would enter it, with some semi-pros in there as well, from the bay area down to LA.
Sure there would be a bit of carnage, but not too much, sizable waves, many makeable, and the aerials would be awesome. Back then just pulling off a good forward or push loop was an achievement, no goiters back then let alone any kind of doubles. Everybody always left happy, and nobody missed their cell phones, nobody had any, besides there is a regular phone there if it was needed.

Or it might have been the "Jalama Shootout", it was a long time ago.
