Hardfly cornered. You have ignored my criticisms of your article with vigor but little skill.

mac won't do it, there is no such thing as a challenge in "hardfly's" world, that can't be put down with a simple snide remark instead, because it's so much easier.

Trayvon Martin's Mother, Sybrina Fulton, Is Running For Office

Quote:
Trayvon Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, is launching a campaign to become a Miami-Dade County commissioner, she announced Saturday. Fulton became a passionate gun control and anti-poverty activist following the shooting death of her unarmed teenage son seven years ago.

She’s challenging Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert for one of five open spots on the 13-member Miami-Dade County Commission.

“Since 2012, I have advocated tirelessly to empower our communities and make them safer,” she said in a statement Saturday. “But the work is not done. I am proud to announce that I will run to represent District 1 on the county commission.” She plans to officially launch her campaign on Monday.

Sometimes I wonder if techno actually reads his citations. Like this posting:

Quote:
Yes, the highest tax rate in the 50's was 90%, but there is more to the story.

Quote:
Real tax rates were a lot lower. Even Levine concedes that “not many people paid that much. Only three baseball players — Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio and Willie Mays — got there.” Indeed, the top effective tax rate was probably somewhere between 50-60% because of a tax code full of loopholes. Now, that’s still higher than today’s top effective tax rate of around 30%. But those 1950s tax rates actually generated less tax revenue than subsequent periods of lower rates. From 1950 to 1963, income tax revenue averaged 7.5 percent of GDP; that’s less than in the Reagan years when rates were being slashed. This could suggest that rates are right around the Laffer Curve equilibrium point in the current economy. Indeed, the following chart from the WSJ makes this calculation over a variety of time periods:

http://www.aei.org/publication/why-we-cant-go-back-to-sky-high-1950s-tax-rates/

As noted here earlier, the actual rate of taxation was nowhere near 90%--that rate only applied to the marginal income of the top earners, and few fell into that category. The actual rate was about 42%. As also noted here earlier, I supported the Kennedy tax cuts, but I opposed those of Reagan, Bush, Obama and Trump because they were fiscally irresponsible, and have resulted in inflation--which is, in effect, a regressive tax.

But techno's citation includes references to Thomas Pikety, dismissed by conservatives as a "socialist." The following is a review of his seminal book:

Quote:
Thomas Piketty's "Capital in the 21st century" has been the most important book economy in recent times. Its aim integrates the debate theories of growth, income distribution, inequality and differences between the extremes income and income of the majority. The work predicts a slow increase in the share of capital income and inequality. His proposal for a global tax on capital is a way to evaluate such tendencies

All of this is relevant to the 2020 campaign because inequality is nearly as high as it has ever been, and concentration of economic power and tax cuts seem to be the chief causes. In previous eras, that has been a major issue in Presidential elections, specifically of the two Roosevelts. Here's what Teddy ran on:

Quote:
The Campaign and Election of 1904:

After Roosevelt acceded to the presidency in 1901, he soon began to think about how to win election as President in his own right. He realized that although he did not always agree with conservative Republicans in Congress, he needed their support in order to win the nomination in 1904. To that end, he worked out an understanding with legislators, especially Senator Nelson W. Aldrich of Rhode Island, which gave him a free hand in foreign affairs in return for holding back the more progressive items of his domestic agenda. But TR did not refrain from using the executive office to break up monopolies, such as the Northern Securities Company, to mediate in labor disputes between unions and management, as he did in the coal miners' strike in 1902, and to use the White House as a "bully pulpit," from which he lectured the nation on how government should regulate big business. Fearful that his anti-corporate sentiments had soured party bosses, Roosevelt toned down his rhetoric in 1903. Most importantly, he was able to place his people in key party positions and maneuvered Mark Hanna, now the Chairman of the Republican National Committee, to endorse his candidacy several months prior to the 1904 convention. Then TR turned to the public, holding press conferences, launching a national tour of western states that lasted for thirty days, and boldly issuing an executive order that provided pensions for all veterans between the ages of sixty-two and sixty-seven.
