It is going to be a painful commuting summer for those of us heading to Sherman Island from norther California. Plan accordingly, especially if you make afternoon day trips. Quick runs to Rio Vista will also be hassle this summer.

Info here. http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist3/Projects/3F340/prjindex.htm

Detours are not much better. They suggest going through Fairfield, circling Grizzly/Suisun Bay and fighting the Antioch corridor. May want to consider going south through Lodi to Stockton then heading east on Highway 4. Choose your poison.

Thanks for the update. It was bad last summer. Caltrans needs to expedite this work to eliminate the recreational impacts and the economic impacts on the City.

Thanks for the heads up Coach. We're planning a trip up there in July so I is good to know ahead of time which route to take. Looks like the 5 to the 4 from SoCal ought to work.

I cross that bridge several times a week and I am impressed with the speed and efficiency of the work. After all, you can only fit so many workers on half a bridge. Traffic hasn't been too bad except for those weekends with sunny weather, with people heading for the ski runs and all.

JP,
580 to 280 through Mountain House & the Byron Hwy is more direct then going to Stockton & backtracking down HWY 4.

I thought initially that the construction signs indicated that the bridge work was to be done by June but that may have changed. The website now appears to indicate construction to be done by the end of summer. Bummer! But at least they are not raising the bridge now, at least until April. Traffic was not too bad last Sunday leaving Sherman Island headed toward Sacramento. Somehow we hit a green light at that construction zone and didn't even have to stop.

And be aware that the connectors between Hiway 4 (Bypass) and Hiway 160 are now open.

Additionally, the roadwork being done just outside the county park has stopped and is supposed to resume in May which should also make things interesting. They have only put up an environmental fence to try and keep the protected garter snake out of the work zone. After the new road comes levee work and after that comes the fish release stations.

There have been several collisions near the Three Mile Slough Bridge, despite all the signs. Saturday, we saw three cars pulled to the side of the road and at least one person being loaded into the ambulance. There is still a bumper in the ditch from a large truck that rear-ended a Suburban. So leave yourself some room and be ready to move.
