The bottom line is they need to maintain parking in the area west of the bathroom not just for our benefit but for those who use the picnic areas over there as well. The diagram that Jeff posted is really vague and unclear

I spoke with one of the Parks people on the phone yesterday and she was claiming that this area would be open to cars on busy days only. However, this runs counter to the posted diagram. As mentioned in the previous post, parking near grass on the weekends is going to be really difficult if I am reading these drawings correct.

They are having a presentation/walk through the area for the public at 11am tomorrow (Saturday-3/19) at the picnic tables near the bathrooms. I would strongly recommend those who use Crissy on a regular basis to attend and participate in the review/discussion. I would also encourage those who may disagree with the proposal to do so in a civil and constructive manner. The last thing we want to do is piss these folks off and get no input whatsoever.

I agree that we should be grateful for what we have—great point dvCali. I *always* feel lucky that I am able to enjoy a place like Crissy for so many hours of my life.

I park in the back and West, and would prefer *not* to have a paved parking lot in front of where I like to park. I often sail during off-times and would enjoy an all-grass view and walk to the beach. However, I thought I would share the design I proposed as a viable improvement to the draft that would generally benefit all.

I only desire to participate in the Park-established feedback process to the extent there is an alternative design that a clear majority of windsurfers and kiters favor, while at the same time being a design that is not inconsiderate of the general public's enjoyment and safety. It’s a tall order, but Crissy is a world-class venue for recreational and competitive sailors and kiters alike. As such, my hope is that anytime there is a process heading toward change at Crissy, a healthy collaborative spirit ensues that pushes for the best result for all, as these changes are relatively enduring.

A handful of us met with the park service on Saturday to walk through the proposed changes. They have received a generous grant from the Haas family and matching funds from the Federal Government to the tune of $5M. The idea is to address some of the deferred maintenance to both the promenade that runs up to the bridge and the East Beach parking lot. In order to qualify for the money, they need to commence work this year.

The biggest maintenance problem at Crissy right now is the fact that the grass does not hold up to the vehicular traffic and gets damaged pretty easily. The recent drought has also exposed the tremendous irrigation needed to maintain the grass. They could address this by keeping the current layout and designating/restricting parking around the perimeter of the grassy areas in either turf block or asphalt. However, they have chosen to examine more radical changes to address some other concerns folks have raised.

That said, they are on very shaky legal grounds to implement these major changes. The SFBA and wider windsurfing community participated in years of planning back in the 1990's as part of a larger environmental process that led to the Crissy Field we have known and loved for the last 15 years.

Any significant changes will need to go through a more thorough review and approval process than they have anticipated. We have some meetings this week to discuss with some of the higher ups at the Park Service and hope to make it clear that we are all for a "refresh" to address these maintenance concerns but will not support a "redesign" that will have a serious negative impact on our community.

We will try to let everyone know when the next meetings are and I would strongly suggest that those who use Crissy on a regular basis be a part of this process. Only about 6 windsurfers and 2 kiters showed up on Saturday.
