|
|
Found a Mistral Equipe II/2 @ auventfou that was not even listed on their site yet.
The issue was that the gasket needed replacing...
This seems a common issue with this board.
Calema web site was / is having issues and Tinho suggested I call
Found a gasket out of Toronto and so, purchased the board.
Managed to remove the old gasket using 3/4 inch chisel with some minor damage.
Cleaned it all up and repaired with epoxy underneath.
Almost ready to put the new gasket on ...
Now for the glue question ...
Tinho seemed to suggest crazy glue as per what i found on web
One fellow suggested strong epoxy
Buddy from Toronto is suggesting marine glue ...
Which glue to use ??
Your thoughts and ideas are appreciated !! |

Joe, if you have the original replacement gasket, you will find that the material is REALLY tough. I had this same issue years ago with my Equipe II XR. I could not "rough" up the material with sand paper or a file. I could barely scratch it with a rasp.
The gasket will adhere better if it is rough when you apply the glue. I found some aircraft epoxy from a company in Nevada, recommended by another windsurfer. However, that was years ago and I don't recall the company. It worked, but I had to touch up a few places from time to time as parts came lose. Mistral's original glue became a part of the board/gasket and was really hard to get off. some of the board came with it. |

yes, the original gasket broke up badly and came off with difficulty
(read somehwere that a fellow used a router to remove old one)
scraped n cleaned and applied epoxy to repair areas
still looks rough, but will work fine !!
i have a different material for the gasket and NOT the original
kind of PVC like material and buddy who supplied it is suggesting marine glue
this PVC material can be ruffed up
my concern is - as you say - it BETTER stick
thanks for taking time to reply
hope to try the board today without the gasket
cold out and light winds, but just can't wait |

I recall the epoxy I used on my board:
http://www.clickbond.com/ When I found it, they didn't have a web site.
My issue with it was that I didn't use enough of the epoxy on the first application.
I had the same damage as you and used a router to grind the surface of the board smooth, but had to fill in the damage with epoxy first. |

I have used this for replacing gaskets on my Equipe II and F2 Phoenix. Works like a charm and is more user friendly than epoxy.

I use Home Depot vinyl wall cove baseboard material to make my gaskets.... About $4 and twenty minutes with a straightedge and a sharp utility knife and I have a new gasket that fits perfectly! Rough up the gasket up with some 60 grit sandpaper and clean with denatured alcohol before gluing it down. The material is a bit stiff so I also chamfer the edges of the daggerboard slot with my utility knife and give it a good coat of silicone dry lube. |

I would suggest a polyurethane in this situation. Epoxy and superglue are strong but more rigid than the gasket you are attaching. You want a strong adhesive that has some stretch to it. I use 3M 5200 fast cure. You can pick this up at Home Depot around here. This is what the marine industry uses for situations where there is some flexing. Wear gloves and tape off anything you don't want to glue. Follow the instructions and do not clean with alcohol !!!!! If you have leftover put it in a zip lock bag and put it in the freezer. It is not cheap but it is an industrial quality product that is hard to beat. I also glue valves back on kites with this. They don't come off again. Not that I hang around with kite boarders or anything . |

2 for epoxy
2 for super glue
2 for marine glue/polyurethane
based on posts , finds and discussions (thanks once again)
buddy is using marine glue and will let me know results
he is in Hatteras saying it is cold n windy
colder here and tried the MEQ II yesterday with duct tape over slot |
