With the price of masts going high, especially NP, I have been considering buying used. But only those described as in really good shape.
Am I making a mistake considering a 5 year old mast that appears to be in good shape?
Thanks, |

Under the Golden Gate bridge or in offshore winds on Lake Superior, HELL yes.
In side-on waves or a river or a lake with accessible shores within acceptable emergency swimming distance, I wouldn't hesitate.
It all depends on the consequences of a mast break. and never forget that shiny new masts can break and warranty is useless if you die out there. |

I've bought roughly equal proportions new and 2nd hand masts. I've only had one broken mast that was clearly a dud as opposed to my fault (I consider it my fault if I fall in the wrong place in front of a big wave and the mast tip sticks into the sea floor and snaps from the weight of the board and wave on it). The mast that broke from just sailing along was brand new (2nd time using it) and the manufacturer replaced it no questions asked.
Caveat - I stick to 2nd hand masts with long term good reputations, i.e. No Limitz, Goya 90% (I think it is made by No Limitz), Ezzy 90%, HSM Hot Rod 90% (this list is not exhaustive, just what I have experience in). I'd be nervous about a 2nd hand 100% wave mast since they are more fragile and are used in abusive environments. I've bought plenty of 100% race masts and never had a problem. |

One could argue that used masts are better as long as they are not damaged, which could be hard to tell. Considering the prices on new masts, it pays to buy used in long run IMO. |

Check Windance's website for used masts under the used windsurfing gear tab. Many times they are selling blemished masts new from the manufacturer that have very small cosmetic blemishes. I've bought two of these masts myself at a very good price. No issue with them and they are Ezzy RDMs.

Blemished new are ok. anything else I wouldn't touch. Used carbon is a gamble. Think of the consequences of a broken mast, is that worth money?
Peace of mind, alone with a new mast, that you have only sailed, is worth it to me. |

The upside of buying new is the warranty. |

On inspection first hand, you may be able to see potential damage. From photos , they leave too much unanswered.
I have a twice used NOLimitz that is used, I would sell without any reservation, that I would say is rare.
I have broken one mast that wasn't my fault, the half that broke came from a dumpster in Berkeley.
Bottom line it's a roll of the dice _________________ K4 fins

As others have said it all depends on the consequences of the break. At a small lake like Lopez, no biggie, a mile off shore in the open ocean sucks. |

RDM, not used in waves or serious freestyle, are quite immortal ... an ultra-light SDM 100% carbon used by a heavy weight racing, I would think about more than twice. |
