From the editors of the Encyclopedia Britannica.

Frank Whittle invented the jet engine. He first put forward his vision of jet propulsion in 1928 in a thesis, while at RAF college. He obtained a patent for a turbo-jet engine in 1930, and founded the Power Jet Company Ltd in 1936. He built and tested his first jet engine, on the ground, in 1937. The Gloster E28/29 prototype jet first flew in May 1941.

The only reason the Germans had the first operational jet fighter was because the British government of the time did not take Whittles work seriously, and he was forced to slow development owing to a lack of proper funding.

His book, 'Jet; The Story of a Pioneer' was published in 1953. In 1977 he became a research professor at the US Naval Academy in Maryland.

It is not I who is rewriting history. Whittle is universally credited with the invention of the jet engine. Pity his work wasn't taken seriously by the government, at the time, when his first jet engine was running, though they belated realised their error, a mistake the Germans didn't make!

Yes familiar with the government not supporting inventors... In the USA the right wing says all government spending is to stop. In fact they have defunded university research and want to continue doing so. They forget the first modern electric communications was funded by us congress from washington to Baltimore the telegraph. Look at the industry that started and still changing. Note a Brittish guy was better funded at the same time almost comercializing the telegraph first. But one was cheaper than the other, so it may not be who was first but could be who gets government backing first as you noted.

Federal support[edit]
Morse made his last trip to Washington, D.C., in December 1842, stringing "wires between two committee rooms in the Capitol, and sent messages back and forth" to demonstrate his telegraph system.[16] Congress appropriated $30,000 in 1843 for construction of an experimental 38-mile (61 km) telegraph line between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore along the right-of-way of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.[17] An impressive demonstration occurred on May 1, 1844, when news of the Whig Party's nomination of Henry Clay for U.S. President was telegraphed from the party's convention in Baltimore to the Capitol Building in Washington.[17]

The first telegraph office
On May 24, 1844, the line was officially opened as Morse sent the now-famous words, "What hath God wrought," from the Supreme Court chamber in the basement of the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C., to the B&O's Mount Clare Station in Baltimore.[18] Annie Ellsworth chose these words from the Bible (Numbers 23:23); her father, U.S. Patent Commissioner Henry Leavitt Ellsworth, had championed Morse's invention and secured early funding for it. His telegraph could transmit thirty characters per minute.[19]
