in case you were thinking of coming up to sail on our fair lake this weekend: DON'T!
Highway 178 is closed between the AuxDam turn-off and Sierra Way, and people headed for the AuxDam Rec Area are being turned around. Due to shifty winds and flare-ups, FS tried to evacuate campers at the AuxDam, but found half the units un-occupied (what a surprise!), and the other half refusing to leave, stating they were fire victims. right...

from the inciweb stats at noon today:
35,711 acres burnt
Road closures: 178 closed from 155 to Sierra Way
Evacuation areas: Hwy 178 to Kelso Valley to Paiute, Bella Vista, South Fork, Weldon, Onyx, Lakeland Estates, Mountain Mesa, South Lake, Squirrel Valley, and Yankee Canyon.
Recreational closures: AuxDam and Old Isabella Rec Areas, PCT from Walker Basin to Jawbone
Damage assessment: at least 150 homes destroyed, an additional 75 damaged

just spoke with a Forest Service Enforcer: the cease-and-desist do-not-enter-the AuxDam & Old Isabella Rec areas order (which has not been as universally enforced as one might wish), will likely be lifted tonight. I'll keep you posted.
The 178 is open again in its entirety through the Valley, but many adjacent neighborhoods are still evacuated as the infrastructure is being secured and hotspots doused

Forest Service order 16-11, prohibiting access to AuxDam, Old Isabella, and SouthFork Rec areas, is officially still in force. But unofficially, FS is allowing folks to come back in as of yesterday (Monday) afternoon - so they have, in droves, hogging space for the July 2 fireworks show.
The AuxDam launch area is pretty packed, but the Ghetto still wide open

The fire is 60% contained as of this morning and life is returning to normal in Lake Isabella - though it reeks of cold ash, there is only spotty cell service (no ATT or T-Mobile yet), and no potable water at the AuxDam. Forest Service order 16-11 to stay the hell out of the Rec Areas on the Eastern shore is still in effect, but not enforced, so people are piling in to the AuxDam area to claim their spots for the July 2 fireworks show.
For myself, I will stay away, and counsel that you do likewise
