All,

Does anyone have a good outfit for shipping windsurfing equipment?

A lot of the common vendors like UPS, FedEx etc have high minimums and crazy prices for anything overrides (165 in length + girth). Greyhound won't take big packages and the freight companies will bust it.

Ideas?

You can try Amtrak, but it's station to station, no residential deliveries.
Air Cargo is another idea, airport cargo to airport cargo.
Seems all mail order windsurf companies are only using Fed Ex or UPS, so maybe there aren't all that many resident to resident options nowadaze.
Looks like 120 buck minimum, if you get the retailer discount.

yes over your quoted , length plus girth , AFAIK can't exceed 166 inches for UPS OR FEXEX.

I JUST SHIPPED a RRD firemove 122, that was over this,
I used Pilot Freight , I dropped off at the freight terminal, and it was delivered to a residence. It was packed better than the boards coming from Cobra.
The cost was $125 for freight , I packed it myself
I have shipped 2 boards via truck freight, and neither were damaged.
I wrote FRAGILE AND EXPLAINED TO THE STAFF..

YMMV.

I DONT KNOW OF ANY over 166" that does work, the Internet companies when it's over than use a freight company, like Isthumus .

u:

Sorry, but very difficult to respond... when I click on reply, it takes me to the home page to check in, but can't get back to the forums easily.. PITA if you have an idea..... also can't figure out how to quote.

But your recommendation on Pilot was the best price at ~$130.
Amtrack or Greyhound won't do ANY boards or sails.

Air Freight used to be good, but with the new TSA rules, makes it almost impossible.

Thx.

Any sails should be fine on FedEx or UPS

I have also used the US Mail without any issues, advise is get $$ insurance.

If I can FedEx is my first pick always, with a account it's slightly cheaper.

The post office has taken sails as large as 7.5m for me. To Canada this is a great option.

U2,

FedEx or UPS are in the $300 range for a 25lb board, even with my account and discounts. USPS won't take anything that big.

Wish I could find some small private operators that do shipping but don't know how to find them. Did have some great ones to the Midwest but not the west coast.

USPS for boards is not what I said. SAILS...YES

THE weight I don't think is the issue, it's the size.

To be really realistic ..what are you shipping and what do you expect to pay?

I was and still am with 125 from Denver To Miami

U2,

Shipping both boards and sails.... none will work with USPS... too big, UPS and FedEx put them in their freight category which runs the price up dramatically.

Only options that I can see is Pilot Express and an Airline (if you want to go thru the TSA crap).

Looking for more options.

Sorry to offer the experience I have used with success.
You must be shipping a sail that I am not familiar with, very long and heavy.

FWIW : Air Freight via scheduled airlines will be more costly with or without TSA security as a further measure to deal with. Travel with passenger possible still on some airlines, within size limitations.

You aren't reading what I have posted regarding boards and OR sails.

You need the retail account, a business license, to ship boards and sails nowadaze.
We just got a Fed X from Maui, 160 buck, for a board.
I just got a Fed X from Hood River, a board, for 120.
