A curious new development- after doing the repairs, then leaving the board bottom-up in my garage for two weeks, a few little orange spots have appeared in new places on the bottom of the board. They are definitely on the inside of the board this time, as they do not sand away.
I'm thinking that water was finding its way out of the big holes previously, and now is being forced out of smaller little pinholes that I didn't notice the first time around. There are a few smaller scratches and such around the new orange spots, but no obvious dings like the last batch. I'm starting to wonder if this is a lost cause. I may just marine tex over the new orange spots to seal up any additional holes and sail it until it falls apart. There are still no soft spots. |

Sounds like a good plan. You may get quite a bit of use out of it before it becomes too soft and useless. I had an old Naish wave board from 1990 that I loved and kept patching it up till it got so soft that it started to delaminate, which is probably what your board is starting to do. Keep sailing it till it falls apart. At least the price was right and you have not invested a huge sum in repairs.
That orange stuff in picture B along the seam is evidence of delamination. This is what happens to the foam core when water gets in there: http://boardlady.com/watervseps.htm |
