I wish I had thought of taking before’n’after pictures of the Roosevelt waterfront we attacked Sunday and Monday as part of this CGWA work party. The difference is stunning. We reduced the overhead jungle to ankle-to-calf-high grass and weeds … almost to the ground above the normal water line. The Corps has treated what’s left to retard regrowth and hopes to remove the remaining sharp stumps with their mechanized equipment. They have the goods, but are very short on the necessary operating funds and personnel.

Lacking actual photos, we’ll use stock internet footage to covey the improvement. Frequent park users will appreciate the comparison:

BEFORE

AFTER

Visually we got a LOT done. We wanted to do a lot more, but due to the very small turnout had to focus our bare-earth efforts on the 15 feet between the usual waterline and the seawall. Sunday was hot and windy, so the park was full, but the vast majority of the work got done by an arthritic, a heart attack survivor, and a multiple cancer survivor averaging 75 years of age. The hardest AND longest worker was 76-yo camp host Dan Bauer, who was at it again shortly after sunrise Monday even though this onerous job is NOT his responsibility; the park simply means that much to him. Another 10 collective manhours were contributed by several on-the-spot volunteers such as Steve, Mary, John, Craig, Gus, and some of the kids and parents camping there who saw us working and chipped in. Ranger Scott Kraynak weedwhacked most of the shorter brush for hours in Sunday’s midday heat in his uniform.

Huge thanks to all involved! I've not sailed there, but I'm sure anyone who does will greatly appreciate the improvement.

You should be in Presidential politics!
Pick a party...they both could use your help!

They wouldn't accept my help or advice, because I admit it when I exaggerate. Very Happy

Some folks told me they got a chuckle out of the photos, so that objective was met. And I've seen people walk across the new "lawn", so that one was met, too. But heads up, anyone tempted to do that: WATCH OUT FOR THE REMAINING SHARP STUMPS. Think clusters of ankle-high punji sticks, except that we didn't pee on them.
