How can we reverse the trailer ban in place here in New Jersey at the Island Beach State Park Marina? AKA The Flats, 24th Ave. South Seaside Park.
The state acquired the old Wheelhouse Marina with Green Acres funds.
The park has recently worked with the NJWWA to keep access to the water here.
Its a small hole in the fence, leading directly to the water. We can't step foot on the designated natural area beachfront. They did do away with the corral, so it is much easier to carry your kit to the water.
Up to half of the parking is designated for slip-holders only. We can understand that the paying slip-holders should have ample parking. Its kind of a joke when you look at the parking lot on a windy day, aka small craft advisories, and the entire slip-holder parking is empty, and the public parking is full of windsurfers and kiteboarders.
The problem lies in that trailers are only allowed to park on street-24th avenue which borders the park, and can fit maybe 4 trailers? Summertime, local vacationers take up these spaces.
The states claim is that the lot cannot fit trailers/ cannot safely turn around.
The kicker is that the far corner of the lot is actually Berkeley Township/S. Seaside Park's property, but the state won't let you drive through the state park section to park in the far corner with your trailer.
There used to be an exit in this far corner, but it is now fenced off/closed.
Do we need to get ticketed and take this to court?
I'd hate to jeopardize our current good standing with the state park by creating another petition. Cartoppers are enjoying this launch with no problems.

It is indeed a delicate situation to maintain our access and deal with the parking situation. The trailer parking seems only crowded mid May through Labor Day. A simple solution would be to car top it for those few months or launch from the public lot at Bayview and 14th Ave. That used to be the most popular lot for access years ago and offers plenty of parking for trailers. A couple of solid upwind reaches and your at the flats.

When the Marina was still privately owned and operational, many sailors parked on the local residential roads north of the marina and accessed the water by the narrow beach along Bayview Ave. This was back in the 1990's. Residents ultimately complained because some people abused the area by rigging on private property, urinating between houses, etc and we lost complete access to this area for years. So everyone ended up back at the launch on 14th ave. Based on our history in this area, I doubt you'll find a sympathetic ear in the borough that would be willing to expand trailer parking. So consider the access we have as truly a privilege.

if you're a local tax paying resident I would start with your local representative. The park is its own entity, and really only answers to politicians. I have had discussions with my representatives regarding land use here, and they were receptive and supportive. Supporting NJWWA is another start, as they are our only advocate.

the entire situation is ridiculous. We are burdened with obstacles under the guise 'protect the land!' while boats, PWC, people, beach themselves all day 500 yards away on the same shoreline gmafb.

ive said this a million times here, if its about the money (and it always is), charge us normal park fees to use the lot (on park property), and give us free access without these ridiculous fences, sign posts, and bogus rules.

I will admit though, it is encouraging to see recent compliance with the new rules, it is the only way to ensure we hang into this little piece of heaven. "a privilege" indeed.

as stated above, you have 14th ave launch option as well, hassle free

the 'new and improved' marina cracks me up, VIP parking strictly enforced by police, and bathroom use, for a bunch of boats that more closely resemble a floating junkyard. Ive heard the police ask people to remove sails and gear from the VIP parking recently as well.
