Indeed. Mike, I apologize for razzing you.

Your sail is hitting the boom, so there's no way you have enough outhaul.

I disagree. When rigging a large sail for power, it's often desirable to have the sail hit the boom. I have heard several expert slalom sailors state that the sail should hit the boom all the way from the back of the boom to the harness lines. Many race sails have reinforcements where the sail hits the boom. The Ezzy is not a race sail, but it has a deep profile. If it would touch the boom so much that the profile is distorted, that would be a sign that more outhaul is needed. I did not see that in the video.

Jeff, one thing I noticed in your videos is that your arms are bent most of the time. Concentrate on keeping your front arm fully (or almost fully) extended all of the time, and your back arm almost extended most of the time, regardless of you're going for figure 7 or power 6 stance.

It looks properly rigged. BTW a single wide shot showing the entire sail is the way to go. But as I said, it looks fine.

Second batten from the bottom could use more tension, but nothing major.

Jeff,

What those guys said. BTW, though, I think Peconic was looking for a photo of your large sail, (9.5?) not the 7.0, because that was the one you used in the videos you wanted tips on.

Also - a good way to look at a sail is to stand on the mast bottom (gently) pressing it to the ground. This way, you get some idea of the natural tension/twist of the sail. See this video at ~5:06:

Then take a picture of the whole thing or as much as you can.

Thanks for the feedback on the 7m - yes already tightened up the battens. M

Something about using iPhone to post stops photo uploads so out of desperation I put the photos into a movie as a temporary measure.

Will take photos of 9.5 when the wind settles down

Feel comfortable rigging the big Ezzys now the little camless 5.8SE I rigged yesterday is another matter. Very frustrating getting sail to settle in gusty 20+knt on/off winds. Video and photos to come when I can upload

Lots of very defensive sailing - as they say a day for survival Smile

Yep - bending arms!!!***%%#. Keep catching myself doing it.
When I straighten out I can feel the sail load up more and I am more balanced getting front foot in.

Again thanks for the help I've got the feeling I'm going through a significant transition.

Cheers Jeff

Try to concentrate on hanging from the harness instead of hanging on with the hands. A good drill is to periodically pretend both hands are "playing the piano" while you are sailing along, this will loosen the defensive death grip which will force you to commit more to the harness.

Much better afternoon on the water today

Used a bigger freeride sail - Ezzy 6.5 legacy

Feel my work on stance is improving my time in bigger winds and chop

Had a few long runs - very satisfied

Still very defensive in these conditions - slowly slowly

Enjoy.....

My local shop guys would say you're still T-Rexing it. I'd say more like praying mantising it.

You don't want your arms STRAIGHT, as that interferes with dynamic sail trim.
Even Nevin "Locked-out" Sayre changed his tune on that. But you want your elbows MUCH straighter than they are in your video. Yours are at 90 degrees, too bent even for most wave sailing; you want them more like 170 for cruising.

Thanks isobars

I've had some obvious comments on my bent arms[:I]

An ongoing problem! Yes the "praying mantis" position

Other than the obvious "straighten your arms" is there anything technical in my setup that could be changed - longer/shorter lines?

Cheers Jeff
