How strict is the "Recommended Sail Range"?

my 80 cm boards seemed to have 50-55cm OFO
and thus a 34 cm fin could be used on such a board
for which sail size ??
I once developed a formula for my 80 cm board of sail size to fin length
realising there is more to fins than just length!!
Fin Length = 8 times the sail size minus 16
for a 6.3 square meter sail -> 8 * 6.3 -16 = 50.4 - 16 = 34.4 cm

then i ask myself would a take an 80+ cm wide board with a 6.3 in 6.3 conditions
at first I thought NO WAY
someone mentioned that Peter Volwater suggested wide is better in rock n roll conditions - may have read that here and is a revelation to me too
and so, back to original statement
it all depends on the rider

I just measured a few of my 80L boards at OFO. They run 30-35 cm, and are absolute marvels at B&J plus max-speed slashing and jibing in Gorge chopswell. I'd want nothing wider when powered up with the usual 4.2-5.2 sail sizes so typical with 80L, and my 23-25 cm fins are considered big but they help me rip way upwind and plane through the lulls.
