Techno--for someone who is supposed to have taught, you have a startlingly narrow view of knowledge. To be specific about the techniques of propaganda, "Build the wall." is a dog whistle. It can evoke not merely the sense of resentment of those like the midwest woman in Penney's that went on a rant about speaking English:

http://abc7ny.com/news/racist-rant-in-jc-penney-goes-viral-speak-english/1668542/

but the extremely racist statements by Trump such as:

Quote:
Condemnation of comments made by Donald Trump about a federal judge reached the heights of the national Republican leadership when U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan rebuked the GOP's presumptive presidential nominee on June 7, 2016.

"I disavow these comments," the Wisconsin Republican said. "Claiming a person can’t do the job because of their race is sort of like the textbook definition of a racist comment. I think that should be absolutely disavowed. It’s absolutely unacceptable."

Trump has been roundly denounced, by the left and right, for saying U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel may be biased against him because of his Mexican heritage.

Hmm, an American citizen--of Mexican heritage--and even Paul Ryan thinks his comments were racist. Trump settled the lawsuit--at great cost.

Quote:
Just to be clear, these are Trump’s own words on two occasions:

When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.

— Donald Trump, announcement speech, June 2015

One of my first acts will be to get all of the drug lords, all of the bad ones — we have some bad, bad people in this country that have to go out. We're going to get them out. We're going to secure the border. And once the border is secured, at a later date, we'll make a determination as to the rest. But we have some bad hombres here, and we're going to get them out.

— Donald Trump, third and final presidential debate, Wednesday

In case you don't understand what a dog whistle is, here is a definition:

Quote:
Dog-whistle politics is political messaging employing coded language that appears to mean one thing to the general population but has an additional, different or more specific resonance for a targeted subgroup.

It's been around since Reagan: http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/2012/07/top-five-racist-republican-dog-whistles

Now, perhaps you can tell us how Rick Perry, beholden to oil companies, is qualified to take us into the energy future?

Quote:
A report in the Daily Beast included a copy of Perry’s transcript from Texas A&M, which the former Governor graduated in 1972 with an Animal Science degree. The transcript shows that Perry had difficulty with some of his science courses.

In the spring of 1970, he flunked Organic Chemistry II. He also got a C in physics, and a number of other C’s and D’s.

Samuel Bodman — President George W. Bush’s second appointee to the post — earned a doctorate in chemical engineering from MIT. (He went on to serve as director of MIT’s School of Engineering Practice. Steven Chu — who served through President Barack Obama’s first term — won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1997. And Ernest Moniz — who currently serves in the office — was the head of the physics department at MIT for five years.

So I guess you go into politics in Texas if you can't master science but you know how to herd compliant animals?

Finally, you now address the question I asked with - "Building a wall is a dog whistle", which = "political messaging employing coded language that appears to mean one thing to the general population but has an additional, different or more specific resonance for a targeted subgroup".

There is only one message and it's NOT coded - Keep the illegals out. I wonder who would be offended by this and who would consider it inflammatory? Illegals?? I SURE HOPE SO.

Your added point about the Midwest women has zero, nothing, nada to do with your inflammatory comment, but keep trying if you choose. Your credibility (what little there is) is tanking.

I wonder if you realize how irrational and hate-filled that comment is? And it begs the question--how do you tell? Do we ignore the Constitution to find out? Should I ask the kids I teach?

Must not be the season for Christian charity for some.

The real problem is the American people and the dishonest companies that hire illegal aliens, and building a wall won't change that at all. If illegal aliens can't get a job, they'll quit coming to the US. If you understand the real problem, fixing it is relatively simple. Needless to say though, it will still take a lot of money to hire the necessary federal agents to the address the problem throughout the nation and to channel offenders through the court and prison systems.

Key word Illegal, really not that confusing . Who's offended? people that bust their ass every day to pay their bills, people who once ran profitable businesses that can no longer compete with competition that hires illegals, peoples who's love ones have been murdered and raped by an illegal, people who now have 40 kids in a classroom because their school is over run with illegal children, PEOPLE WHO CAME THE RIGHT WAY AND RESPECTED OUR LAWS.

Agree Laughing Laughing

And may I add we need to stop giving them motivation to break the law and come here illegally. Such as sanctuary cities , school discounts , drivers licenses
and more.
It's a crazy mixed message. Don't come , but if you do we can offer this..

Returning to Rick Perry, and his qualifications. Pandering to the oil industry?

Quote:
Donors from the oil and gas industry contributed more than $11 million to Perry’s candidacies for governor and president. One of his most loyal donors has been Kelcy Warren, the CEO of Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners, which is the company behind the controversial North Dakota Access Pipeline. Just a month after Perry left the governor’s office in 2015, he joined the board of directors for Energy Transfer Partners and its subsidiary, Sunoco Logistics Partners.

According to Energy Transfer Partners’s 2016 annual report, Perry owns $154,000 worth of partnership units in the company, in addition to being compensated $82,420 in cash in 2015 for his role on the board of directors. Perry remained on the board throughout his short-lived 2016 presidential campaign, even though many presidential candidates remove themselves from their private sector roles while running their campaigns (see, for example, Jeb Bush). As of publication, Perry was still listed on Energy Transfer Partners’s website as a member of the company’s board.

Perry’s 2015 presidential financial disclosure report reveals even more ties to oil and gas companies. Last year, his wife owned up to $15,000 in investments in Energy Transfer Partners as well as Sunoco Logistics, while Perry identified investments in QR Energy ($15,000-$50,000), Diamondback Energy ($15,000-$50,000), and Grey Rock Energy ($50,000-$100,000).

The report also shows Perry earned $250,000 “consulting” for Holt Cat, a San Antonio-based firm that sells and services equipment to companies in oil and gas, among other industries. The company is led by Peter Holt, whose family owns the San Antonio Spurs and has been a big donor to Perry throughout his political career. When Perry decided in 2013 to retire rather than run for re-election as governor, he made the announcement at Holt Cat. Both Holt and Warren served on Perry’s PAC’s eighty-member advisory committee during his most recent presidential campaign.

The oil and gas industry was pleased after Trump chose Perry to lead the Department of Energy, according to Reuters; others also cheered Trump’s Secretary of State nomination, Wichita Falls native Rex Tillerson to be Secretary of State, who was CEO of ExxonMobil up until his retirement last Wednesday.

Financially rewarded after his term as governor for pandering to the industry. Another alligator.

Yes, the Trump administration's business in Ukraine was corruption.

Quote:
By Associated Press
KYIV, Ukraine — Two political supporters of U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry secured a potentially lucrative oil and gas exploration deal from the Ukrainian government soon after Perry proposed one of the men as an adviser to the country's new president.

Perry's efforts to influence Ukraine's energy policy came earlier this year, just as President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's new government was seeking military aid from the United States to defend against Russian aggression and allies of President Donald Trump were ramping up efforts to get the Ukrainians to investigate his Democratic rival Joe Biden.

Ukraine awarded the contract to Perry's supporters little more than a month after the U.S. energy secretary attended Zelenskiy's May inauguration. In a meeting during that trip, Perry handed the new president a list of people he recommended as energy advisers. One of the four names was his longtime political backer Michael Bleyzer.

A week later, Bleyzer and his partner Alex Cranberg submitted a bid to drill for oil and gas at a sprawling government-controlled site called Varvynska. They offered millions of dollars less to the Ukrainian government than their only competitor for the drilling rights, according to internal Ukrainian government documents obtained by The Associated Press. But their newly created joint venture, Ukrainian Energy, was awarded the 50-year contract because a government-appointed commission determined they had greater technical expertise and stronger financial backing, the documents show.

Drain the swamp? No, reward energy alligators.

Quote:
U.S. shale producers have brought on Rick Perry, former U.S. Energy Secretary, to help in their lobbying campaign for new sanctions against Saudi Arabia and Russia, which includes blocking Saudi crude shipments to North America's biggest refiners. Domestic oil and gas companies are also pushing the White House to compel oil-producing nations to reduce output to boost crude prices in light of a Saudi-Russian oil price war and resulting supply glut.
