Foam surfboard blanks range from about 1.8 lbs density to about 2.8 lbs density and they come somewhat pre-shaped. I can see shipping being expensive, but so is shipping EPS. A surfboard blank would be much easier and cheaper to glass using polyester or vinylester resins. The structural properties of the surfboard blank foam would be substantially higher than EPS.
I used 2 lb EPS foam on one board and have regretted it ever since. You just can't offset that kind of weight using every "weight reduction trick in the book". |
The answer to someone using 2lb EPS,will vary. Your discussion makes sense.
In my case, the 2lb block was 10miles away, I purchased 2 blanks 100 + liter, for what one board blank would have cost, plus another smaller one. They were cut off a huge block on a CNC machine with outline , nose and tail rocker, they we input into the computer based on my dimensions, the machine did the rest. This avoided any shipping cost. Since I had sussed that 2lb was a viable option, this became the choice. _________________ K4 fins

Very slow progress, personal complications.
Part of a very unscientific test of 1.5 vs 2lb EPS
Dropping a bomb onto each to evaluate the impact difference.

Someone mentioned Cobra built boards,
Each company has their own properitary materials, amount , placement at the factory. From what I have read, these are not disclosed to others using the factory.
For a company to state they use carbon, is a easy statement to make, where and how much is not easily found. A few companies disclose a diagram of materials and placement. Looking for thickness of say bamboo or Australian pine is harder. I've not looked for these for some time, so I would welcome to see them.
Point: saying general things about Cobra built boards, is that ..generally speaking _________________ K4 fins
