I have to think back during my days at UCI working in 1969-1971 with nitric acid on zinc plates to ultimately produce intaglio art prints. No real ventilation in the work space, and I remember breathing the super strong fumes at the time etching the plates. Probably nuts, but what did I know? I guess ignorance is bliss. Yet, I did produce some great artwork at the time.

Acids without excellent ventilation is always a very bad thing. You probably used diluted nitric acid and might have gotten some nitrous oxide (laughing gas) fumes along with acid fumes. If you used concentrated nitric acid you might get the toxic red-brown nitrogen dioxide fumes . I doubt you would be posting now if you had been breathing nitrogen dioxide fumes. Next time someone has a stuck insert in a fin let's do the safe thing and all chip in and buy them a new fin.
