Here's my newbie rig(Nissan Van):



Eventually I'll probably move the boom to the other side or on the floor as I get smaller boards.

What type of materials have you found to be compatible or incompatible with contact to the underside of boards?

I was thinking about sleeving the unistrut with grey plastic conduit(2-1/2") and having them be rollers for the boards to sit on so they don't slide over the material.

What about padding? Needed?

go to the $ store and get pool noodles...

i see people use pvc piping to make whateve shelving you desire....or furniture grade plywood.

or in my case...boards in board bags...and throw everything in as one big pile

Honda Odyssey + PVC pipes = place for 3+ boards, 6 sails (4.2 - 7.5), 4 masts, 4 booms, ...

Chrysler Town & Country, stow and go seats, they fold flat into the floor.
PVC rack holds 4 or 5board, under the bottom board is room for all masts- 340--460. The box on the left holds sails about 6. Depending on where I'm going, long distance, the boons are stored on top the boards, additional sails fit between the boards on the sides.

The box was intended for sails, great, also to sleep or nap on if necessary.
The PVC is glued, once boards and cargo are stored this has been sound.
The bars have thin carpet glued to provide board protection, using fat things like pool noodles, intrude on space, footstraps take a wider area.

If needed I can also store 1 or 2 boards on their sides on the box , inward towards the rack. This gives me 7 boards, safe and sound, they do need to be organized for fitting. Overhang into the passenger seat by my windsup, but above the seat and mirrors all highly visible.

The box was made very sturdy, the top carries a lots of things. By packing very tight I don't usually get any cargo shifting. Previous van , the same, was totaled , fully loaded, the pvc rack shifted enough to break in the impact, no damage to boards and cargo.

So far I've had one very hard braking episode on the freeway and nothing moved out of place. The pipe insulation has a mat like finish so the boards don't slide and the fin rack has velcro holding it down.

1 1/4 schedule 80 mounted using existing hole with fitting with pipe thread and unions so it can be removed with out tools or cutting.

i have an old Pontiac SVC family van - not extended
can take out front passenger seat when required - unbolt it ...
no passengers typically and so ...
2 boards on top , 2 inside on top of each other with board bags
usually stick with 3 boards and seat stays in !!!
what about trailers - better option ??
sounds less expensive
and if it can be wheeled into the garage - can be open trailer ??

I'm in the planning stage for a lightweight aero trailer to tow behind my TDI. I just can't see getting an entire vehicle at this point and I'd love to have all my gear ready to go.
