What I find fascinating is, what if it had walloped the moon for six? Bound to have had some effect, however slight, on orbital speed, or spin rate. (Whether head on against, or kicking up the backside, or just glancing spin rate blow.)
Dedicated sea users need to consider these things. A larger tidal range from a slightly nearer orbit would be a major inconvenience. Already, I find that 'lugging' a long board and rig down half a mile of low tide beach a major irritation. A mile might be a step too far.!
On the other hand, a decreased tidal range from the moon wandering a bit farther out, might affect the earth's currently 'locked in' daily rotation rate.(Tidal pulse effect.)
But a glancing blow which could alter the moon's rate of spin could be really serious, It would affect the birth rate! Many a troth has been plighted (necessarily often enough) beneath the benevolent silvery face of the man in the moon. Nobody would do so beneath the ugly side 'turn off' visage!!
On the whole, I'm glad it missed! |
