For years I didn't need booties, because my bare hands and feet had the same temperature cutoff of about 46 degrees. Now my feet get hives that itch insanely 24/7 for weeks if the water is below the low 50s, so I'm forced to use booties in April and November. It's not foot size that's the problem for me; most mfrs make 13s. It's strap feel, entry, and release. I crash often due to not being able to find and get in the back strap (if I look down to find it my balance problems take over), and any bootie that fails to release from the strap instantly is dangerous, IMO.
My favorite used to be O'Neill's original Heat Wave Ninja, but they absolutely destroyed it with a snot-and-Teflon frictionless bottom a few years ago. It may as well be on roller skates now. I wound up buying a collection of split-toed booties (I won't even consider round-toed booties; too unstable) from SwimOutlet and am still comparing them. |

Hi Isobars
Can you at Atan booties where you are, I don't wear boots myself but I know they are very highly regarded and the lack of strap means they don't get stuck in the straps.
https://www.boardseekermag.com/equipment/Atan-Boots-064/ - the link shows boots but they do a range of styles and thicknesses |

Given the combination of beach rock and water temperature some sort of bootie is required 9 months of the year. 5mm is nearly warm enough in the winter and not overly warm until the early summer.
The ones I have currently seem to snag on the sides of the straps dye to the way the sole wraps around. I'll need to see if I can try on some alternatives since committing to a gybe then getting my foot stuck is getting old. |

I've looked for Atans many times in the U.S., and always come up empty. Isthmus claims to carry them, but only in very small child's sizes like 2, 3, and 4.
One complaint I hear about Atans (and the old but excellent O'Neill Heat Ninjas) is rapid wear on land. I solve that problem with oversize Crocs. My size 15 Crocs work GREAT with booties for ease of use, warmth, and protection on land.
My bootie straps aren't what's hanging in the straps; it's foot and/or sole texture, and it's a major safety issue to me. |
