Just stick that 40cm fin in there and rig that 6.5 and go get some rides.
Most windsurfers are gearheads, but you'll be better served with TOW
than internet analysis.

The 34 and the 40. Still thinking about a 50. Got a 6.5m in today and harness lines. I'll get some bigger sails when I feel like the 6.5 just isn't enough.

RTZ needs to get a ride on a smaller board ASAP. IIRC that hasn't happened yet? That should get him over some of the gear obsession.

I want the fins so I can experience what it's like having to much or too little fin on a board.

You are way ahead of yourself. Until you are reasonably comfortable planing hooked in, with both feet in the footstraps, you are not going to be able to judge whether you have too much or too little fin.

If you're not spinning out, there's probably nothing wrong with the fin you have.

If I can't get on a plane for a given sail size and on the same board, I look to rig bigger. Adding 10 or 20 cm. more of fin ain't going to do much. Especially for the Op who's skill set is there yet.

If you can't plane with a big board and a 40 cm fin, that 6.5 is clearly not big enough.

He said, nobody on his lake uses a sail larger than 6.0. Shocked So there is that to consider.

When it's light; I'm the only one out sailing. On big days when I'm hanging on to my 4.7; it always has me thinking about a 4.0 or smaller. Get one or no?

No. Get the Harness and Harness Lines and get in them. You will then be wanting larger than the 4.7.
