Trump doesn’t just disagree with US intel leaders, he also mocks them

Quote:
The nation’s top intelligence officials have reported to Congress that Iran, at least for now, is not trying to develop a nuclear weapon. In fact, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats testified to senators yesterday that Iranian officials appear to be complying with the Obama-era international nuclear agreement, which Donald Trump has taken steps to destroy, despite its efficacy.

This morning, the Republican president decided to respond – in the most Trump-esque way he could.

“The Intelligence people seem to be extremely passive and naive when it comes to the dangers of Iran. They are wrong! When I became President Iran was making trouble all over the Middle East, and beyond. Since ending the terrible Iran Nuclear Deal, they are MUCH different, but a source of potential danger and conflict.

“They are testing Rockets (last week) and more, and are coming very close to the edge. There [sic] economy is now crashing, which is the only thing holding them back. Be careful of Iran. Perhaps Intelligence should go back to school!”

I will gladly concede that when it comes national security challenges and interpretations of intelligence, there’s often room for debate and deliberation. A president and top members of his/her team will sometimes reach different conclusions based on incomplete information.

But in this case, American intelligence professionals shared unambiguous facts about Iran. Donald Trump didn’t like those facts, so he thought it’d be a good idea to belittle U.S. agencies in public.

Perhaps, if intelligence officials would simply tell him what he wants to hear, and echo the White House’s political preferences, the president would be less inclined to ridicule them.

That’s not how any of this is supposed to work.

Making matters slightly worse, before this little Twitter tirade, Trump also published a missive warning of new migrant caravans “marching to our Border.” The president indicated that he learned about the developments from Fox News’ morning show.

Because in Trump’s mind, U.S. intelligence professionals are “passive,” “naïve,” and in need of additional schooling, but conservative media personalities are reliable sources of valid information.

in light of what 17-18 of his direct top people being indicted and or convicted mainly about russia issues and about 40 more indictments against russians over the election and assiciaded national security issues. well one would think he would make sure national security is as clear as it could be with the most dangerous nation in the world to democracy.

But there seems that he only wants the russians and no-one in the USA to know about many things with his non-disclosed clandestine meetings with Putin and no american translator. Remember Don jr lied about one trying to set up backchannel communication with Putin, that no american could ever read.

Trump had another 'off the books' meeting with Putin at G20: FT

Quote:
Rachel Maddow relays a report by the Financial Times that Donald Trump met with Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit in Buenos Aires in November. While Putin was accompanied by an interpreter, Donald Trump only brought his wife, Melania.

After claiming Obama skipped intel briefings, Trump skips intel briefings

Quote:
In 2014, for reasons that never made any sense, Trump insisted Obama was blowing off intelligence briefings. Five years later, the irony is extraordinary.

well it appears the FBI did believe trump violated national security, and was a threat to the usa.

Former FBI deputy director details 25th Amendment discussion

Quote:
It’s been nearly a year since former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe was fired, but he’s now firing back at his Trump administration adversaries with a book called, “The Threat: How the FBI Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump.”

McCabe spoke to CBS News’ Scott Pelley, who reflected on the interview this morning.

“The most illuminating and surprising thing in the interview to me were these eight days in May when all of these things were happening behind the scenes that the American people really didn’t know about,” Pelley said on the show.

“There were meetings at the Justice Department at which it was discussed whether the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet could be brought together to remove the president of the United States under the 25th Amendment,” Pelley said. “These were the eight days from [former FBI Director James] Comey’s firing to the point that Robert Mueller was appointed special counsel. And the highest levels of American law enforcement were trying to figure out what do with the president.”

Asked if the conversation about the 25th Amendment was in jest, Pelley, apparently relying on McCabe’s version of events, said it was not.

If the subject matter rings a bell, it’s because we learned last fall about alleged conversations, led in part by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, about whether administration officials should invoke the 25th Amendment to remove an unfit president from office.

The alleged discussions unfolded around the time Trump leaked classified intelligence to Russians in an Oval Office meeting, which was also around the time Comey alleged that the president spoke with him about going easy on former White House National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, who was the target of a federal investigation at the time.

There were competing accounts as to whether the conversation discussing the 25th Amendment took place, and as best as I can tell, McCabe’s comments to CBS, if accurate, would be the first official confirmation that the discussions actually occurred.

In the same interview, the former FBI deputy director said Rod Rosenstein did, in fact, offer to wear a wire during presidential meetings. Though we’ve heard similar accounts before, McCabe reportedly told CBS that Rosenstein wasn’t kidding and the subject came up “more than once.”

Finally, it was just last month when the New York Times reported that after Trump fired Comey in 2017, the FBI was so concerned about the president’s behavior that federal law enforcement officials “began investigating whether he had been working on behalf of Russia against American interests.”

The same report added that counterintelligence investigators “had to consider whether the president’s own actions constituted a possible threat to national security.”

McCabe seemed to confirm to CBS that this did occur. The former FBI deputy director told Pelley how concerned he was about Trump having been elected “with the aid of the government of Russia.” McCabe added, “I met with the team investigating the Russia cases, and I asked the team to go back and conduct an assessment to determine where are we with these efforts and what steps do we need to take going forward.”

Bizarre breach of Mar-a-Lago highlights Trump security ineptitude
Rachel Maddow reports on the strange story of a woman who wandered Mar-a-Lago during a presidential visit and was only caught by a resort receptionist whereupon it was discovered the woman had four cell phones, a laptop, an external hard drive, and a thumb drive reportedly containing malware.

If you care about national security, you should be terrified that people handling our most sensitive secrets were first denied a security clearance.

Ever since Democrats reclaimed the House majority, there has been a prevailing sense that it wasn’t a matter of if but when the Trump administration would find itself under siege from investigative congressional committees wielding their subpoena authority. This week, that “sense” became a reality.

On Wednesday, House Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal officially requested six years of President Donald Trump’s personal and business tax returns. Earlier the same day, the House Judiciary Committee voted along party lines to authorize a subpoena to obtain the completed Mueller report and underlying evidence gathered during the special counsel's investigation. On Tuesday, the House Committee on Oversight and Reform authorized four subpoenas to advance two significant investigations.

Three of the Oversight subpoenas call for additional testimony and documents related to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross’ unprecedented and potentially illegal decision to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census. The fourth subpoena compels testimony from former White House Personnel Security Director Carl Kline in connection with the committee's investigation into the security clearance process at the White House. It follows Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings' disclosure Monday of cooperation from a “whistleblower” who works in the White House Personnel Security Office.
