Hi Gang,
Take a look at the 2nd. image below and notice the winds at all the ocean buoys. So how often do you see WEST winds at the ocean buoys off the Bay Area? Especially in the spring. NW sure, WNW sometimes, SW to SE yep during storms but WEST is uncommon.
I prepared an animated graphic in the first image. The more yellowish ares are high pressure zones. While the dark colors are low pressure zone. Watch how the low pressure moves from today, Tuesday 16 to tomorrow Wednesday 17. Notice how this change impacts the wind at the ocean buoys, inside the Bay and in the Central Valley.
This same change is happening to the winds just aloft. Interesting how pressure differences in the Great Basin many hundreds of miles away can determine the quality of the winds at say 3rd. vs Berkeley.
