I am thinking of getting the following board starboard F-type 158 2006 model. I am wondering if anyone has experience with this board and how does it compare to a formula, since both boards widths are 100cm. I think this could be my go to light wind board as I am not racing, just trying to get on the water as much as possible. Also how would this board perform if the wind picks up.

So you already have a 9+ meter sail and a mast for it? Plus the 66+ sized fin?
Some sailors would say a light wind slalom with a 9 meter sail is a much earlier planing setup.

From the internet/starboard web site on the 158:
"F-Type alters perception of light-wind sailing with ballistic planing ( and coasting) power. Lightweights and Formula foes had no control issues with its width . Point and go - upwind , downwind, beam reaching - it did it, quite often when its rivals could only schlog."
Windsurfing Mag USA , May 05.
I have had three Starboard formula boards, so I would guess that the 158 does pretty much as it says above. However, that's a lot of board for a 140 lb guy, specially if you are going to use a large sail (9-10m). You might give up a couple of knots of earlier planing with something like a 135-140 L board and an 8 m sail, but it will be MUCH more user friendly.

IF you weigh 140, I think that a GO 141 and an 8.5 sail would be plenty to get you going. If you can't get going on that combination in marginal wind, the wind is too marginal. Go for a bike ride.

Yes, the Quest continues
I think the Go would be a bit too beginner for me. I have a 7.5m that I am looking to use with something 85cm wide and up to get out planing in the 15 km range. My quiver currently consist of a 110 L wave board paired with a 6.5m sail. I am light so I can get out in around 25km with that setup.

Starboard introduced a 155L Formula back in 1999. I believe it was the industries 1st production formula board. I purchased this board (DRAM construction) back in 1999. Although I own a more modern higher volume 100cm Formula board I use the 155L much more often. The 85cm width and lower volume makes it much more controllable in heavy chop and higher wind compared to 100cm boards. I weigh 220lbs and can plane on the 155L in 14mph wind with a 10.0m race sail.
I recommend U2U2U2's 155L Starboard formula for anyone looking for a low cost alternative to new if the are lighter weight or sailing in choppy water.
