Weird, he moved out of his shop in the outer Sunset just before I started surfing, so I had to drive down to Oneill's on 41'st to buy my first surfboard in '65, a 10' Oneill Intruder.
Didn't buy his wetsuits until '66, when Wise started carrying them at 48th and Wawona, which was two blocks from Jack's original shop in San Francisco.
Have had some version of an Oneill wetsuit from '66 until NOW.

Article in Santa Cruz Good times today .
It says that Jack was a windsurfer seems pretty obvious that
O Neil Forebay at San Luis Res was named after him.
I think he used to sponsor the Speed Trials down there but
that was way before I started.
Any comment from the older timers than me?

I don't know.
I have competed in 3 of the first 5 Speedtrials there.
I suspect Jack Oneill was only a mat rider, not even a boogie boarder.
He was pretty much out of the water when I started surfing in '66.
Now PAT Oneill was a 4A rated surfer, so probably tried windsurfing also along with everyone else in SC.

Jack's daughter Shawn used to windsurf along time ago. I think she got into the waves as well. Yes we owe a lot to Jack , he led a simple life too, I remember seeing him ride around on an old bicycle in town.

Wiki says the O'Neill forebay and O'Neill dam were named after a San Joaquin rancher (J.E. O'Neill) who's efforts helped bring the dam to existence in 1967.
Was Jack a rancher at one time? He doesn't seem like the ranching type.

Growing up in Merced, the dam was a big deal. JFK was at the dedication. I vividly remember driving along 152 imagining being under hundreds of feet of water. Our scout troop went on a field trip to the site...pretty impressive to this small town boy.
