Admiral McRaven: "Our Republic is Under Attack from The President"

Quote:
Admiral McRaven, a retired Navy SEAL Admiral, former Commander of US Special Operations Command, and former Chancellor of the University of Texas has penned an OpEd in the New York Times that is worth a read.

The Admiral draws two ceremonies he recently attended- a change of command for a General and a celebration of the O.S.S. Society- to compare the celebration of service and sacrifice for country with the prevailing sense of foreboding at what Donald Trump and his administration are doing to our country.

He writes:

But, beneath the outward sense of hope and duty that I witnessed at these two events, there was an underlying current of frustration, humiliation, anger and fear that echoed across the sidelines. The America that they believed in was under attack, not from without, but from within.

He cites examples of military leaders confiding to him that the current “leadership” of our government is all too willing to sell out the ideals that make this country strong. He cites generals who are staunch Republicans recognizing that Trump is selling out our ideals. And why is Trump selling out our ideals? Because he doesn’t understand them.

It is easy to destroy an organization if you have no appreciation for what makes that organization great. We are not the most powerful nation in the world because of our aircraft carriers, our economy, or our seat at the United Nations Security Council. We are the most powerful nation in the world because we try to be the good guys.

He goes on to talk about honor, duty, commitment to allies, standing by our obligations and states that none of these things are important to Trump. And he closes as follows:

And if this president doesn’t understand their importance, if this president doesn’t demonstrate the leadership that America needs, both domestically and abroad, then it is time for a new person in the Oval Office — Republican, Democrat or independent — the sooner, the better. The fate of our Republic depends upon it.

This is a huge OpEd. Adm. McRaven is well-respected throughout the military and has been apolitical in the past. For him to pen these words is a huge public admission that cracks in our Republic are not sitting well within the military and a big signal to those in government to stand behind our values and stand up for our Republic, and remove those who don’t share our national ethos.

A pastor who voted for Trump says he ‘begged God’ in his prayer closet for impeachment

Quote:
The Rev. O’Neal Dozier, the outspoken leader of the Worldwide Christian Center in Pompano, Florida, who voted enthusiastically for President Donald Trump in 2016, says he's now begging God to remove him from office through impeachment.

“God has heard my prayers, the prayers of the righteous and the true patriotic Americans who love America and who want to maintain our republic and democracy. I have asked and begged God in my prayer closet to remove Donald Trump from the office of the Presidency of the United States of America, because of his unfitness to lead this nation that God loves so dearly,” Dozier, a Republican, began in an op-ed for the South Florida Times.

“The righteous and the true patriotic Americans are pleased to see that the House of Representatives have launched a formal impeachment inquiry into president Donald Trump’s attempts to strong-arm Ukraine into digging up dirt on presidential candidate Joe Biden,” added the former NFL player and law professor.

Former Republican congressman stuns with commentary on his party's lack of courage and morality

Quote:
DAVID JOLLY: These are the moments where my anger is somewhat palpable because you've just got to be honest. These are, in today's Republican Party, spineless politicians rotten to the core without virtue. Without any level of human integrity, devoid of self-respect, self-reflection, without courage, and without the moral compass to recognize their own malevolence.

And one day maybe they will have the recognition of how they failed the country and themselves in this moment. But that would be giving them credit that somewhere down deep they have the goodness to recognize how to reconcile their own failings with what is right and just in American politics. And frankly what is right and wrong in the eyes of adults and children alike. And there's no other example. And why no argument will ever work for Republicans, and I agree they inevitably will make the case this is not impeachable.

The problem is it requires every single Republican to align with Donald Trump and say that only Donald Trump speaks the truth. That Lt. Col. Vindman, a man of honor and Purple Heart recipient, does not speak the truth. Ambassador McKinley, somebody who's referred to as the “dean of the foreign service core,” does not speak the truth. Ambassador Yovanovitch, somebody who dedicated her life to promoting freedom and U.S. ideals on the world stage, does not speak the truth. Only Donald Trump does. And there is no greater example of selling your soul to a charlatan than what Republicans are doing right now in the House and the Senate. And their legacies are on the line just as much as Donald Trump's. We know the character of Donald Trump. We know the failings of Donald Trump. Watching play out in this impeachment proceeding is the failings of a Republican Party and every single member that goes along with this.

In her new memoir to be released Tuesday titled “With All Due Respect,” Donald Trump’s former ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley claims that two top White House officials tried to recruit her to turn against the president “to save the country.”

Haley, 47, writes that former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and former White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly tried to convince her to work around and subvert Trump, but she says she refused.

Former GOP rep: Trump is ‘intellectually and psychologically unfit’

Quote:
It’s always helpful when Republican members of Congress leave Capitol Hill and begin speaking their minds without fear of political consequences. Take this New York Times report from earlier in the week, for example.

By the summer of 2017, Dave Trott, a two-term Republican congressman, was worried enough about President Trump’s erratic behavior and his flailing attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act that he criticized the president in a closed-door meeting with fellow G.O.P. lawmakers.

The response was instantaneous – but had nothing to do with the substance of Mr. Trott’s concerns. “Dave, you need to know somebody has already told the White House what you said,” he recalled a colleague telling him.

Anti-Trump super PAC launched by Republicans takes aim at McConnell

Quote:

The Lincoln Project, a super PAC launched by veteran Republican operatives seeking to oust President Trump from office, has now trained its sights on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), accusing him in a new ad of neglecting his home state

The 60-second spot accuses McConnell of enriching himself during his long tenure in Washington, dubbing him “Rich Mitch,” while noting Kentucky’s low rankings among states in job opportunity, education and health care.

The Lincoln Project has a much smaller war chest than other independent groups going after Trump. But it is aiming to make the most of its unique position by directly antagonizing the president, who appears particularly piqued by the involvement of lawyer George T. Conway, who is married to White House counselor Kellyanne Conway.

While the group’s primary focus is Trump, it has also sought to needle other Republicans it accuses of enabling Trump’s presidency.

In a statement, George Conway cited McConnell’s moves to limit the scope of Trump’s impeachment trial, focused on the president’s conduct toward Ukraine, as among the motivations for targeting him.

“When he fixed the impeachment trial by blocking evidence of Trump’s high crimes and misdemeanors, McConnell violated and abased the solemn oaths he took as a United States Senator,” Conway said. “Add in the fact that, as our ad shows, he’s managed to do much better for himself than for the people of Kentucky, and it becomes a no-brainer: McConnell has to go.”

The cover up continues.

Quote:
CNN)The FBI's top lawyer is resigning amid renewed pressure from President Donald Trump and Republican allies for the bureau to remove any remaining officials associated with the Russia investigation.

Dana Boente, FBI general counsel, has served 38 years in a variety of career posts at the Justice Department. He is resigning June 30, the FBI said on Saturday. He was appointed general counsel in 2018 after serving as US Attorney in Alexandria, Virginia, and a brief stint as acting attorney general.
It's that period in early 2017 when Boente stepped in after Trump fired then-acting Attorney General Sally Yates for telling Justice Department lawyers not to make legal arguments defending Trump's executive order on immigration and refugees.
Boente signed one of the reauthorizations to surveil Trump campaign associate Carter Page, approved by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. An inspector general report last year found numerous instances of inaccuracies and withheld information in the FBI's applications signed by Boente and Rod Rosenstein, who became deputy attorney general. The Justice Department has since withdrawn those warrants.

The inspector general didn't find any wrongdoing by Boente and Rosenstein but that hasn't mattered to conservative critics who argue that FBI Director Christopher Wray hasn't done enough to clean up the FBI. Boente is the most senior-level official remaining at the FBI associated with the Russia investigation, an issue the President and his political campaign have resurrected this year.
NBC News first reported Boente's plan to resign and said Wray requested his departure on orders from top Justice officials.
A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment on whether Attorney General William Barr is forcing Boente out of his job.

'I wish you the best': US military adviser resigns after Trump's controversial photo op at church

Quote:
A former principal deputy undersecretary of defense for policy has resigned from the Defense Department's science board.

James Miller's reasoning centered on President Donald Trump's visit Monday to St. John's Church, where protesters were cleared with tear gas so that he could pose with a Bible for photographs.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper was also present during the visit.

"You may not have been able to stop President Trump from directing this appalling use of force, but you could have chosen to oppose it," Miller wrote to Esper in his resignation letter, which was obtained by The Washington Post. "Instead, you visibly supported it."

Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

A Department of Defense adviser has resigned, effective immediately, from the military's science board, citing what he believed to be a violation of conduct from Secretary of Defense Mark Esper.

In his resignation letter to Esper, which was obtained by The Washington Post, James Miller Jr., who served as the US undersecretary of defense for policy from 2012 to 2014, recalled that he swore an oath of office to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States" and "to bear true faith and allegiance to the same," similar to what the defense secretary had done before he took office.

"On Monday, June 1, 2020, I believe that you violated that oath," Miller wrote to Esper.

another generaL FROM WHAT i CAN TELL IS QUITTING THE RIGHT WING...

John Allen is president of the Brookings Institution, a retired U.S. Marine Corps four-star general, and former commander of the NATO International Security Assistance Force and U.S. Forces in Afghanistan.

A Moment of National Shame and Peril—and Hope

Quote:
We may be witnessing the beginning of the end of American democracy, but there is still a way to stop the descent.

The slide of the United States into illiberalism may well have begun on June 1, 2020. Remember the date. It may well signal the beginning of the end of the American experiment.

The president of the United States stood in the Rose Garden of the White House on Monday, railed against weak governors and mayors who were not doing enough, in his mind, to control the unrest and the rioters in their cities, and threatened to deploy the U.S. military against American citizens. It was a stunning moment. But, in particular, it was notable for three important reasons.
