SF bay, San Pablo Bay, 4 fools winery launch.

Any advice on sailing here?

The San Pablo Bay meter has been reading consistently 20+ for days.
It seems to be located approx 2 miles off shore.

On a day when it reads 20, what is the approx wind speed near to the public boat ramp?

Do I have to slog a mile to get to a wind line? I'm worried about catching a current, long before I am fully powered.

I would normally rig a 5.0 in 20 MPH wind. Would the size that works out in the channel be too small to get me all the way back to the ramp? Does the wind drop off dramatically, or just mildly?

thanks, for any insights. It appears to be merciless launch, if you goof up and set off from there under-powered, and ill-informed. but it's enticing as well. I guess I'll just have to jump in and take some short reaches at first.

I live in San Pablo, but haven't launched anywhere except SugarTown and the Railroad/SantaFe launch sites.
Nothing special, watch out for trains coming fast and don't sail anywhere near the piers. Always looks windier than it is, the bay giving a long fetch for windswells to build.

There was a very detailed thread on this launch within the last couple of seasons. I would suggest a topics search.

The old thread is here: http://www.iwindsurf.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=28869&highlight=san+pablo&sid=0f8e1ee6c071abeff62d5db0d5233658

Aware a few sailors have been out there recently, and the access through the marina at 4 Fools is, for now, still ok.
