I'm confused now. Are they easterly or westerly? Does the wind blow with the river or against it? |

Iso unconfused things. He edited his confusing West vs East comment. He mostly had it right the first time. Only in a east wind is it going with the current. |

Don't be confused. What is called a West wind (which blows from the West
to the East) is more typical during the Summer, and blows against
(opposite to) the current. This is one of the things that makes the Gorge
Magic. It might be the only place in the world where you get 4 or 5 foot
swell with 5 or 6M wind. East wind (which blows from the East to the
West) travels with the current, so unfortunately limits the swell
substantially, and typically only blows in the very Western section of the
Gorge (typically Stevenson, Dalton's point, and Rooster Rock). When
You're staring at a glassy smooth river in Hood River, do not despair,
20 miles West will be 5.5M sail conditions. Easterlies are more typical in Autumn, but I just finished off a couple of dandy Easterly days on Saturday
and Sunday at Stevenson, using my 5.7 and ~100 ltr board. Easterlies tend
to be steadier and even the puffs come on smooth as a lovers caress.
Easterlies are more casual and less adrenaline charged (unless you try and get the 60MPH Easterlies in December at Rooster).
All the launches are pretty much side shore either direction the wind blows,
with the exception of The Boat Ramp in Stevenson which is on-shore (in
an Easterly) due to the curve of the "bay" there.

Each day, after breakfast go to one of the shops downtown - all within a few blocks of each other.
Windance, Big Winds, or Second Wind.
They will tell you the forecast for the day and the best place for your ability to sail. |

After more research and talking with windsurfing friends who frequent the Gorge (They've seen us sail), I think the Hook might be TOO mellow. There's a balance between off the hook and boredom. Appearanlty the Hook is "The Kiddy Pool". We have a lot to learn but I think the kiddy pool might not be the best place at our level. They recommended the Event site or Luhr Jensen just up wind, followed by the Marina in 3rd place. Even though it's busy I wonder if the Event Site would be the best place for the first time. Luhr Jensen could also be good... maybe. Being upwind it provides a buffer if we drift down wind and we can bail at the Event Site if we need to. However, looking at Jensen on Google Earth it appears to be a pretty rocky launch, where-as, the Event Site is more launch friendly. Is that the case?
I read somewhere the Event site is $5 bucks? Is that still the applicable? If so, is that per person or vehicle? Where do you pay your entrance if applicable?
Thanks |

The launch at Luhr Jensen/Waterfront park is very nice. I would say pretty much the same as the event site. |
