By popular demand (actually, 2 guys on the beach), I'm bringing back on the forum my Gorge Statistics!
I'm still around (yes, you can can me a die-hard tourist), but I am closing the books today. Not unhappy (=happy) of my season here, sailed 86% of the time, on a 7.4 or smaller.
Ok, I know some of you don't consider anything above 5.3 worth calling it "windsurfing", so for you guys, I sailed 53% of the time on a 5.3 or smaller. Drops even more if we talk about "Gorge Winds" (4.2 or smaller): 24%
Here's the complete picture:
So, how does 2017 compares to the previous years (say 2013 an up)? You'll know the answer if I get 500 hits with this topic.

Guy,
your wisdom and insights are always enjoyable! I hope I don't have to post this 499 more times to get your next installment.

Thank you, Ken and ericandholly.
Here's an updated table that gives the % of sailed days, windy days (5.3 and less) and blasting days (4.2 and less).
Note that I computed the smallest sail I used on a specific day, not the sail I used the most that day. But there was a minimum of one hour of planing on a specific sail for it to count. |

Nice Statistics charts. A chart of sites sailed with sail sizes used would also be interesting. |

I will compute boards and sails used. For the sites, it's
- Hatchery when they call for moderate to strong winds in the corridor. Without any doubt the place I sail the most, specially when my wife is around (quite an hatch rat, that one)
- Roosevelt whenever I can , specially in June.
- Viento in the morning, when they call for light westerlies and direction is good (steadiest 5.3 to 6.2 conditions in The Gorge)
- Rowena when it's happening in the Near East
- The occasional Wall or Rufus, when I feel I'm in luck
- Stevenson easterlies, where I do most of my light wind sailing in the Gorge. |

Hope you are not sailing in all the smoke at Stevenson. Bad for your health, really bad if a water scooping fire plane scoops you up. |

According to the state's traffic cams, Sunday's swap meet, and my own neighborhood 175 miles upwind of Cascade Locks, the air is no better out east. The worst traffic cam shot I could find is 40 miles east of Arlington. I've never let wildfire smoke keep me of the water, but that may change once the wind switches to westerly and puts us downwind. I can't IMAGINE what the smoke must be like near the fire. |
